Tributes are being paid to Ian Cooke, a well-known figure originally from Ryde, who passed away earlier this week.
Ian, who was born and educated in Ryde, was found in his South London flat on Thursday morning.
Police were alerted after family and friends reported him missing after a week of their phone calls and messages going unanswered. Investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, but foul play has been ruled out.
Ian, who lived alone in Stockwell, was widely recognised in sporting circles on the Island. A passionate supporter of Portsmouth Football Club and a devoted follower of cricket, he regularly attended matches at Lord’s and The Oval. His enthusiasm for sport extended internationally, having travelled extensively to support the England team at numerous World Cup tournaments.
Professionally, Ian began his career as a compositor, serving his apprenticeship at J. Arthur Dixon’s in Newport. He later moved to London, where he spent the majority of his professional life in the printing industry. Starting with traditional typesetting and linotype machines, he adapted to the changing landscape of the trade, eventually working as a proof-reader until his retirement.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming weeks.
