Cowes Harbour Commission is celebrating the news that it will receive £68,617 from the Government’s decarbonisation fund as part of the Clean Hybrid Alternative Marine Powertrain (CHAMP) project.
As previously reported by Island Echo, companies across the UK are to benefit from £60million funding to supercharge the development of clean maritime solutions.
Mathwall Technologies Limited is leading a project funded through Innovate UK, named Clean Hybrid Alternative Marine Powertrain (CHAMP) 2. The project will take forward prototype demonstration vessels to be tested in multiple real-world environments including areas of Cowes Harbour that are managed by Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC).
Harbour Master Ed Walker said:
“Securing a long and sustainable future for Cowes Harbour is a priority for CHC so we’re delighted to have won a share of the funding from this third round of the Governments Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC3).
“Working alongside established experts at Mathwall Technologies to develop a clean alternative to conventional maritime powertrain will give a significant boost to our sustainability ambitions and assist in the delivery of our Carbon Management Plan”.
Wightlink has been given £42,414 as part of a £3.25million funding pot to explore the future of electric boats.
Wight Shipyard Co has received a massive £4million as part of the Zero Emission Cross River Ferry project, supported by Collins River Enterprises, BAE Systems, Beckett Rankine and Aqua Superpower.
Carisbrooke Shipping Limited has been awarded £96,436 as part of the Carnot High Efficiency Hydrogen Combustion Engine Demonstrator project.
Another local project has been given £1.3million of funding; the Zero Emission Solent Tri Foiler project, led by Chartwell Marine Ltd. This project is looking to develop an electric hydro-foiling high-speed boat capable of carrying up to 40 people on coastal routes, for example from Cowes to Southampton, or Hythe to Southampton.
