The Isle of Wight Council are yet to issue housing benefit payments to thousands of Islanders, but officials say they will pay bank charges and write to the landlords of those affected.
As first reported by Island Echo yesterday, around 3,400 claimants of housing benefit failed to receive a payment from the Council as expected after the Bank Holiday weekend.
Last night around 2,400 households were told that they would be paid what’s owed, with a further 1,100 people paid this morning (Wednesday). However, it appears that no payments have been issued.
The Council say they will pay any bank charges incurred by people affected by delayed housing benefit payments. The authority is also offering to write to tenants’ landlords to explain the situation, if required.
Meanwhile, the council remains in constant dialogue with its bank to ensure the payments are made as soon as possible – but no confirmed date or time has been given.
If any customer has received bank charges due to the delay in the housing benefit payment due on Tuesday 7th May 2019, e-mail [email protected] with ‘7th May 2019 housing benefit late payment – bank charges’ in the e-mail subject in order they can be prioritised.
Alternatively, send a copy of the relevant month’s bank statement including transactions and charges to the Housing Benefit, Revenue Services, PO Box 238, Newport, PO30 9FP.
UPDATE @ 13:45 – Delayed housing benefit payments are now being paid into people’s accounts, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.
Around 3,400 payments have now been processed and should appear in accounts within the next few hours.
The council remains in constant dialogue with its bank to ensure every payment is processed successfully and as a matter of urgency.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The council would once again like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this delay and will be investigating the issue to ensure a repeat does not occur”.

That’s a shame lol!!
west wighter
you should never laugh at others misfortunes, as you may find yourself in the exact same situation one day.
a wise person speaks because he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something.
you know which category you have put yourself in, with your comments.
You had an opportunity to redeem yourself by retracting your badly chosen words, sadly you have not, so I guess
the consequences are all yours to enjoy, in whatever form they take.
You have laughed at people who have not received something (housing benefit), that has caused them stress and worry.
You will either receive something you didn’t want, or be deprived of something you consider yours, which will cause you
stress and worry. I am quite sure that will be your karma. It will happen sooner or later.
the next time you are angry, upset and possibly crying over something you lost, had stolen or been burdened with – remember this post, as it will be the karma you deserve.
You’ve obviously a lot of time on your hands!!
I’ve said bit, everyone is entitled to there opinion!!
Goodbye
and everyone is entitled to the consequences of their opinions. By the way, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one and most of them usually stink.
It’s clear to say your heart is cold like ice and that you don’t care about others that’s are finding it’s hard.
I hope your job not one that you have to be a team player as it’s clear your not.
10.35am? West Wighter
Why aren’t you at WORK???
So the iwc have lied to over 3400 above people about housing benefits. I would like to know if the servers has bin hacked as our data will of bin taken ie banks accounts so they say it a glitch but people belive it has bin hacked
I see the only words you managed to spell correctly is ‘housing’ and ‘benefit’.
Meanwhile the government send an extra £160 million on external help for Brexit. Maybe spend some of that to help councils with hiring competent staff. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48181004?fbclid=IwAR2Os_mL8AuKVVMuzyyx5Uqg8WdfuP_l-qSEGVTaxGyQBIqOSl4GjohKKVU
Paying bank charges to people is admirable but sometimes the knock on effects of missed payments like this can completely collapse someone or a familys finacial stability. Especially those in receipt of benefits who are quite often in hardship.
I think they should be helping to rebuild that.
They couldn’t organise a knees up in a brewery!
Join the discussion…so how much longer are we talking about? There not really keeping us up to date! They say they will write to our landlords if need be but the council can take weeks to write and send out letters.
The question is .why are people on housing benefit at all ?.
We are one of the richest countries in the world
Why are they not earning enough to pay their mortgage themselves.
Because most of us are on minimum wage’s. Bosses here are too tight to pay above! I start work at 6am. But still need a bit of help
It’s not right .If everyone was paid a decent wage .the government would not have to pay any benefits .the money could be spent on hospitals etc .makes me mad that wages are kept so low for no reason .
It’s an easy option for the lazy!!
Private renting is more in some cases than a mortgage in monthly payments, but in simple terms we are paying a mortgage just somebody elses thats all lol
Just because a country is rich doesnt mean it hasnt got poor people who need help
Why do we have people on housing benefit in there thousands on the Island? It is a disgrace and a scandal. Our local authority in respect to school and education so people can hold down good jobs or enter apprenticeship and start work is so bad we as islanders hold some of the blame for letting them get away with the standards and measures of performance we see today within our society.
Vote them all out in the next local elections…
All Quiet now you’ve got your weekly taxpayer donations!!
Lol
Makes me sick
you do realise that people on benefits are taxpayers as well. – some food items are charged at the standard vat rate.A mobility aid for the elderly is 5% rated for vat. Maternity and sanitary products are 5% vat. As shops add vat on, collect it from the customer and pass it straight to HMRC, then all benefit recipients are indirect taxpayers.
also, these benefits you pay income tax on…
the State Pension
Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
Carer’s Allowance
contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Incapacity Benefit (from the 29th week you get it)
Bereavement Allowance
pensions paid by the Industrial Death Benefit scheme
Widowed Parent’s Allowance
Widow’s pension
Housing benefit may not attract a tax charge, however, the above do – perhaps you should do some research, west wighter, before making such incompetent posts.
Oh dear you are soooooo sad!
Go and get a job!!
Waste of fresh air!
Happy days……………..,,.!!!!!
West wighter – it takes one, to know one.
I note that you have been posting on this site with alarming regularity – do you not have a job – are you making vile posts in order to get some attention, which will distract you from the misery and loneliness that is your pitiful existence.
As I said before, enjoy the consequences of your actions, you deserve them.
