Plans to build 3 new homes on vacant land close to Ryde town centre have divided opinion, with concerns raised over wildlife, parking and drainage.
Ebb Developments is seeking permission to construct 3 2-bedroom, 2-storey houses on land between 24 and 26 Newport Street in Ryde.
The proposed market homes would feature front gardens, private outdoor space, secure cycle storage and landscaping.
A statement submitted alongside the application says the development would fill a ‘conspicuous’ gap in the Newport Street frontage.
Ryde Town Council has offered conditional support for the scheme, subject to a number of requirements being met.
These include an appropriate contribution towards the Solent Special Protection Area to protect wintering birds, a contribution towards affordable housing and measures to ensure the development does not increase surface water run-off.
However, the plans have also attracted objections from local residents concerned about the impact on wildlife and parking.
Mark Armstrong, who lives in Green Street, has called for the application to be refused.
He said:
“This application should not be passed. There is wildlife living on the enclosed land behind, including foxes and badgers.”
Mr Armstrong also raised concerns about parking in Ryde, which he described as ‘already limited’.
Southern Water has meanwhile highlighted a lack of information accompanying the application relating to drainage.
The water company has requested a condition preventing construction from starting until details of foul and surface water drainage disposal have been submitted and approved in writing by the Isle of Wight Council, in consultation with Southern Water.
The public consultation period for planning application 26/01289/FUL closed last week.
A decision on the proposed development is scheduled for 18th November.
