Households across the Isle of Wight have not received payment of housing benefit as expected today (Tuesday).
Those in receipt of housing benefit have taken to social media to express their concern about the lack of payment, which was expected to hit bank accounts this morning following the Bank Holiday weekend.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The Isle of Wight Council can confirm there has been a problem with housing benefit payments due to be credited on 7th May 2019.
“The council is investigating the issue and working to resolve the matter as soon as possible”.
Updates are expected as the day progresses.
UPDATE @ 16:33 – It has been confirmed that around 3,400 claimants have been hit by today’s delayed housing benefit payment.
The Isle of Wight Council say they are continuing to work urgently with its banking provider to ensure delayed housing benefit payments are made as soon as possible using the ‘faster payments’ system.
It is hoped that the payments, delayed from earlier today, will be cleared and in people’s accounts by early evening.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The council would like to apologise for the inconvenience the delay has caused and will be investigating the issue to ensure a repeat does not occur”.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – 2,500 payments are currently being processed and money should hit bank accounts this evening.
However, the Isle of Wight Council have confirmed that the remaining payments – around 1,100 – won’t be processed until tomorrow morning.
A spokesperson for the Council has said:
“Around 2,500 payments, delayed from earlier today (Tuesday), are currently being processed and it is hoped they will be cleared and in people’s accounts this evening.
“The Isle of Wight Council will continue to work with its banking provider to ensure the remaining payments are processed as a matter of urgency tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, when a further update will be provided.
“The council would like to apologise for the inconvenience the delay has caused and will be investigating the issue to ensure a repeat does not occur”.

Get a job! Then you won’t need benefits
Too many idle people on this island
How very narrow minded. I, like many others in receipt of housing benefit, have a job but im also a single mother responsible for looking after my child, its impossible to have a full time job yet be available for school pick ups, half terms etc. Not only that but very few island employers pay a decent enough wage to exist without needing to be topped up with benefits. There may be some people on benefits that are ‘lazy’ but i imagibe they are in the minority.
Bit presumptuous aren’t you. What about people in Ill health or those forced to pay ridiculous amount of rent to private landlords. Let’s hope after that comment you never find yourself out of work where you then need to claim benefits you pompous p****
lol
Laugh all you want mate. Sad person.
Get a job mate !!
Spongers!!
Mr West Wighter, DO YOU NOT HAVE A HEART? as yes 25% of people maybe as you unkindly put it spongers (but that still no way to talk about people you don’t know as it bullying) but the other 75% are people who are disabled and have long term illness then you have the families that have kids and have to juggle child care and try to work part/ full time its not that easy in this day and age. So please stop and think before you say as I feel sorry for all the families that are finding hard as it is and now this it going to put now stress on them.
I can only say if you working and are able to not have to have help from the benefits then think yourself lucky and don’t try and put others down as this is a caring thing to do. As people and I said before if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all, as there no need to put people down.
Fyi I’m not in receipt of benefits.
I’ll tell my 90 year old Mum to get out and get a job shall I ????
That comment makes you sound like the biggest a** hole ever, some people don’t have a choice, they have to claim benefits and some people are limited to the amount of hours they work due to illnesses etc
Are you for real, west wighter. Some years ago, I was suddenly made redundant. The pay I had been getting at the job, just covered my bills (rent – I do not own) and food, which meant I had no disposable income to save up. I was living hand to mouth, whether I liked it or not. Had it not been for the welfare safety net we have in this country, I would not have been able to keep my flat and would have been homeless and no job. Housing benefit kept a roof over my head until I got another job. I am now a few years along from those days, with a better paying job and been able to save some money for a rainy day.
Yes there are some who work the system and all they are doing is depriving theirselves of the opportunities that life affords them by staying on benefits. They are also taking money from the “pot” which means less for those who really need it.
Your comments may come back to haunt you west wighter – you are only ever a couple of steps away from being skint and on benefits yourself.
E.g – Sudden unexpected medical condition eats up your savings trying to get rid of it. Lost your job because you cant work, no money – then you claim benefits – you get the point.
you have the opportunity to apologise on this board for your badly chosen words west wighter – I would take that opportunity
before karma provides you with a humbling lesson.
Well said
So you’ve never been on benefits? Lucky you. There are a lot of pensioners who receive housing benefit. People who have worked all their lives and now only get a state pension.. which is not enough to feed a cat! Many people find themselves in situations where they’ve had to claim benefits through no fault of their own.. This could be you in a blink of an eye! Don’t judge people until you know all the facts. What a nice person you must be!
No electric left and getting darker! Still no payment at 8.30 Pm and freezer defrosting. It’s not on. I paid my rent myself this is my living money. Was told early evening so I guess I’m one of the unlucky few
Main thing that wireless internet still going.
Get a job
As a seriously disabled person I cannot believe that you are saying this and tarring us all with the same brush..I have worked all my long life until I physically couldn’t work..You brave keyboard warrior,
Keyboard warrior
Totally agree with you. Probably a coward who would shut his/her self if fronted in person.
You seriously are a PRICK

I’ve still not been paid, now gone overdrawn in my bank due to bills going out, which I will be charged for….. I wonder if the IOW council will pay the fine as its down to their mistake?
Explain situation to your bank and they maybe able to cancel charges for you. Good luck
I haven’t
Oh no still haven’t been paid!
You may loose you’re sky tv and new car !!
Oh and internet.
Not to mention Waitrose delivery’s.
No need to work when we pay it all for you!!
Unbelievable!!!!!’nn
West wighter you sound like a uncaring person who just wants to cause upset and drama.
I would advise you seek help as you come across as a narcissist and that not a healthy attitude to have.
Plus you remind me of an ex partner I use to know, who could not give a care about others as long as he and his family were okay.
In this day and age I think we all should be able to work in harmony and not to cause drama.
Oh dear West Wighter is illiterate as well as ignorant! lol
You’re the unbelievable one you knob. I really do hope karma bites you on your pompous arse
So I take all the housing benefit payments come out of your bank account then?
See they haven’t cut your internet off!!
Losers!
