An area of Little London in Newport has been cordoned off by Police this evening (Wednesday) following the discovery of a piece of historic ordnance.
Officers are standing guard over what appears to be a shell that has been placed on the ground near Riverbank at Newport Harbour.
An inner cordon has been established, as well as an outer cordon. As a result access to Little London has been restricted with all pedestrians and motorists being directed to the Sea Street end.
It’s unclear how and when the historic object from the war was found, but it is currently situated just feet away from the banks of the River Medina.
Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts from Portsmouth have been made away of the situation and are understood to be en-route to the Island.
UPDATE Thursday – Police have confirmed that they were called at 18:24 yesterday evening to a report of a suspected unexploded ordnance device at Blackhouse Quay.

For goodness sake. This isn’t the shell, it is merely the projectile.
The shell carries all the explosive, this is just a lump of copper filled with lead.
NO risk of explosion.
Just take it up Clifton Grade and get £4 for it, job done
Talk about make a drama out of a lump of 70 year old scrap.
Pathetic for so called modern informed professional people .
Its good to know that you know more than the professional disposal team in Portsmouth who would of been sent photos and felt a trip over here was necessary.
I am sure the “professional team” would also love a trip to the Bahama’s all wages & expenses paid too, but they likely have Police who could deal with handling a lump of copper filled with lead, without having to have ‘special’ costly training, and even more costly gear & have their wages higher for doing the course.
Plenty on wightbay who collect scrap and pay for it too.
God knows what you lot would do if Putin drops live bombs soon. Never leave home I guess. Best paint the cupboard under the stairs brown too.
Clearly just the solid projectile. No more harm than a sledge hammer head.
You can clearly see by the photo, that the nose has no fuse or detonation device attached, so a solid lump of metal.
The Police have spare capacity to waste on such, but are never available for helping people who really need it when robbed etc.
A very wish washy weak society, all overly concerned with ‘safety’ yet muggers, rapists, knife crime, gun crime, acid attacks, and gang drug wars carry on, with not even a thin blue line now.
IF they cared about all our safety, not just the wealthiest in society, then SHOW IT
Return the illegals, and make room for our own growing low life in prison for a start.
Your local armed response police have the tactical training to remove unexploded ordinance if needed, so they could have easily dealt with a non explosive projectile. Wilbur is spot on this was a waste of time for the bomb squad.
Are you sure about that? Could be an explosive round?
Tell nan someone has found her deal doe
Through it on the floating bridge
Throw perhaps?
Looks like a big Dog Poo ?
They should have taken it to Newport police station in a wheelbarrow and rang the bell
Still there now after 11hrs…..speedy work
“When your dog does a giant chubb roll poo and it rolls off down the hill”
It’s black pudding, have a full English….
Best way to test the vialbility of this device would be to drop it on the Ocean Hotel.
Some tips are indeed explosive on their own – from WW2 it’s often incendiaries containing phosphorus; many hundreds of which were fired at Cowes and Newport. If unexploded and undisturbed, they can potentially stay active almost indefinitely; particularly if lying in thick mud, earth or water. They need no ‘fuse’ or detonator because they react with oxygen (but not water) when accidentally exposed. So, whilst this really does look like a bit of pipe, it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. If it starts to smoke (wispy white smoke), run upwind because a dollop of white phosphorus will burn straight through an arm, torso or leg. The only immediate action is to submerge in water. Hope this helps!
