A collision involving a lorry and a car at the roundabout in Apse Heath is causing tailbacks in the area this morning (Wednesday).
It’s reported that the incident has taken place on the busy roundabout outside Raj’s Premier and is blocking most of the road.
Traffic is building in all directions, with the main Newport to Sandown road closed from Branstone Cross. All motorists are being diverted via Princelett Shute and Ventnor Road.
Separately, Southern Vectis says that it’s 09:03 Route 8 bus from Amazon World to Sandown has been unable to serve Winford due to a temporary obstruction on Forest Road.
UPDATE @ 09:36 – Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are currently tending to a female from a Toyota Corolla.
Meanwhile, 1 fire appliance from Shanklin has been mobilised to the scene, in the interests of safety, due to fluids on the carriageway.
UPDATE @ 10:01 – The scene has now been cleared and the road has been reopened in all directions.
The DAF tarmac lorry involved – which was heading to a nearby work site in Winford – has been driven away from the scene with minor damage to the near side.
The Toyota has come off worse and has been recovered by Bartletts.
Emergency services are now standing down.
UPDATE THURSDAY – It has been confirmed that a woman in her 80s suffered serious leg injuries in yesterday’s crash.

Isn’t that the second accident already today? Hope everyone is okay.
I travel that way frequently and it is a nightmare at that junction, usually because drivers don’t use it as per the Highway Code. Ignorance and bad driving cause numerous near misses and accidents every day. I am not a fan of traffic lights but unfortunately this junction probably needs them.
Totally agree. It is so busy it must have lights before someone is killed
Mini roundabouts do not work and are not well understood by many motorists. The temptation is to cut across the centre when turning right ignoring the need to take a circular route around the centre circle.
If used at all they need to have a much bigger diameter and arrows on the road.
Someone will be killed if lights are not installed.
It’s the zebra crossing people have been hurt where it is just away from junction as well, lights only solution.
Mini roundabouts are not well understood! People who don’t understand the working of roundabouts of any size shouldn’t be driving in my opinion!
Only on this island would a comment like this be made. Is it any wonder so many accidents occur.
Totally agree
It’s a ‘mini’ roundabout, small, but still a roundabout, so give way to the right.
What else needs to be said. Perhaps the poor lady didn’t see the big lorry approaching from the right.
Without making any judgment on this, from the photos it does look as though the car failed to give way at the roundabout to the lorry approaching from her right.
However, I agree that this is a dangerous junction that would benefit from having traffic lights.
Another idiot who doesn’t know that you are supposed to give way to traffic from the right, even on a mini roundabout.
She was probably confused by the dump opposite housing all the disused vehicles. Owned by the idiot who wanted to become a Councillor as an independent.
Question for Paul, I’m genuinely interested and willing learn. Please tell me what happens when all the traffic arrives at the roundabout at the same time? And as i live locally, i see it happen often. Highway code here is out of the window, its the quick and the dead. The pedestrian crossing a small distance from this roundabout adds to the chaos here at busy times.
It is a difficult situation when all entrances to a roundabout have vehicles on them and usually ends up with everyone sitting there waiting for someone to make the first move. Personally, I try to make eye contact with the driver of the vehicle to my right to see if they give an indication of their intention to move or a sign that they will wait. Just have to be a bit patient in that situation.
Supposedly whoever stopped first is first to go but to be honest I slightly edge forward and watch what other’s intentions are otherwise you’d sit there all day.
IT IS CALLED COMMON SENCE, The main traffic flow is SND to NPT and vice verser.
I once witnessed two old dears shut their eyes and speed up and hope for the best.
BUT hey i am guilty of ageism…even if it is true.
A dangerous roundabout, just like the one at Whiteley Bank.
Personally I blame the drivers for not knowing what to do when they
approach roundabouts.
Good example as to why you have to give way to traffic on you right…especially if they are bigger than you!
Looking at the photos it appears the woman driver is on the wrong side of the road, and didn’t give way the the lorry coming from the right….am I reading this right or do I need to go to specsavers??.
That’s a slip road up to Alverstone Road so she’s in correct lane.
She wasn’t on the wrong side of the road, there is a slip road there for people turning left. She should, however have given way to the lorry coming from her right as with all roundabouts.
I thought that at first, but I assume that’s the exit from the little car park
The road directly in front serves the shops car park, it’s not the main road.
More women drivers will be along soon.
Everyone of your comments prove you are Batty. Why not get a life?
It may appear that the cause was obvious but if the lorry was coming through a bit quickly, having seen the vehicles to to right stopped for for him I would have some sympathy for the lady. The visibility to the right coming from the west is poor. Knock down the shop or install traffic lights
Re. Know it all i presume the first person to edge their wheels over the white lines has priority.
There is usually a four way stalemate most days there.
I tend to look at the number plate of the other cars, those with a HW or DL number plate tend to happily sit there looking dumbfounded waiting for someone to take the initiative.
Very true
HW = Half Wit
DL = Dopey Local
What hope do sensible people have.
Its a good job she hit a lorry not a car or motorbike . The minor damage looks to be several thousands of pounds
I asked our late area representative to look into the safety aspect of this roundabout / pedestrian crossing. He himself had some near misses on this crossing, and so have I. There are bad blind spots on the roundabout for traffic coming from Lake where you cannot see traffic emerging from the road leading to the Winford estates until the last minute. The vision is blocked by a BT junction box and general household stuff’
From the other direction the corner of the convenience store again completely blocks your sight of traffic emerging from the Ventnor direction. From the photos it looks as if the car has moved across the roundabout as the lorry has gone through from the Ventnor road. It really is a recipe for accidents.
