Islanders will be swapping their T-shirts for jumpers this Bank Holiday weekend as an arctic blast is set to hit the UK, bringing temperatures as low as freezing to our shores.
According to Isle of Wight weather forecasters IW Met Service, a spell of cold northerly winds is set to develop as we move towards the weekend. This will bring some unseasonably cold weather with night frosts in places and scattered showers during the day – a stark contrast to the previous Easter Bank Holiday weekend which saw temperatures hit 27c.
Friday will see sunny spells, broken cloud and showers developing with temperatures around 15c in a fresh northerly breeze. Friday night will be breezy with clear spells and a slight frost developing in some parts.
Saturday will be a cold day with a few scattered showers and temperatures only rising to around 10c or 11c, which is said to be very cold for the time of year. The fresh northerly wind will also makes it feel very cold. Saturday night will see clear spells which means a frost is likely across the Island with temperatures falling to as low as 0c in many parts.
Sunday will be yet another unseasonably cold day with scattered showers once again. Temperatures will rise to around 10c or 11c in a moderate northerly becoming westerly breeze. Sunday night is likely to be cold once again with a frost in many sheltered parts of the Island.
Unfortunately, Bank Holiday Monday will be another cold day with increasing cloud amounts and a moderate northwesterly breeze once again. Temperatures will remain very low at around 10c or 11c.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, has said:
“Considering we are only one and a half months away from mid summer, this upcoming spell is very significant and we advise gardeners to take the adequate precautions in protecting delicate plants, especially in more rural low lying parts of the Island”.
Next week looks to be a little more unsettled with further spells of colder than average weather looking likely, especially later in the week.
