Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and colleagues from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team are attending a cliff rescue incident at Luccombe this afternoon (Thursday).
A dog is reported to have gone over the cliff in the remote location between Shanklin and Ventnor, resulting in a full-scale rescue being launched.
Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat has also been launched.
The incident is thought to have begun sometime around 15:30.
UPDATE @ 17:28 – Search and Rescue teams are looking for a 7-year-old tan-coloured Doberman.
A spokesperson for Solent Coastguard has said:
“The 7-year-old dog disappeared over the cliff, into thick undergrowth, and the owner cannot locate it.
“We have a rough location, near Yellow Ledge.”
Both CRTs and the Bembridge Lifeboat remain on scene.
UPDATE @ 18:24 – The search has now been called off with all resources stood down.
Amazingly, the dog has been located safe and well at the top of the cliff.
UPDATE @ 19:35 – A spokesperson for Bembridge RNLI has said:
“RNLB Alfred Albert Williams’ was launched at the request of Solent Coastguard to assist in a search for a 7-year old Doberman dog that had gone missing in the area of Luccombe/Bonchurch cliffs. Ventnor & Bembridge CRTs were already searching and it was hoped that the dog would be spotted by the crew of the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ in the thick undergrowth so that the Coastguard team could effect a rescue.
“Having reached the area and carried out a first pass search, the Y-boat was launched from the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ with two members of the crew onboard who then went ashore to see if they could find any sign of the dog. When it became apparent that the undegrowth was too dense to spot very much they returned to the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’.
“After two hours the search was called off and the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ returned to Bembridge. Just before they got back the Ventnor CRT reported that the dog had been found and was believed to be fit & well.
“The ‘Alfred Albert Williams; was recoved by 6.30pm”.

Ever heard of a lead!
Should be given the bill for the cost of wasted operation.
So long as the same applies to humans who get into difficulties due their own stupidity!
Nice that without the third world breeding us into crime, poverty, overcrowding and misery, we can afford to have our emergency services help pets here. Wouldn’t happen is such areas as too busy dealing with human victims. Well done all.
