His Majesty’s Coastguard has launched a search and rescue operation in Shanklin tonight (Tuesday) where teams are scouring the cliff in a bid to locate a possible casualty.
Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter from Lee on Solent has been scrambled to the scene and is currently using a powerful search light, as well as infrared cameras, to aid efforts to locate a person that has possibly fallen from the cliff between Shanklin and Luccombe.
On the shore, Coastguard Rescue Officers from Bembridge and Ventnor are walking the length of the beach.
Island Echo is told that members of the public alerted emergency services after hearing a concerning noise.
The search continues.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – The search was called off late last night after no persons were located.
The incident is being treated as a false alarm with good intent.
