A paddleboarder who found herself in difficulty a couple of hundred metres off the shore at Yaverland has been rescued by a fishing boat this evening (Sunday).
At just before 18:00, HM Coastguard was alerted to concerns for the welfare of a paddleboarder who was drifting out to sea. She had been sighted by concerned members of the public.
Bembridge RNLI’s Inshore Lifeboat and Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat was tasked to assist, with Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor also mobilised to Yaverland from the scene of another incident at Shanklin.
Island Echo is told that the tidal and wind conditions suddenly changed, leaving the middle-aged casualty unable to reach the shore safely.
A fishing boat from the nearby Yaverland Sailing Club was able to swiftly assist the woman and take her ashore, ahead of the arrival of emergency services.
The casualty has escaped any injury.
HM Coastguard has responded to no less than 3 incidents in the East Wight in the past 2 hours, firstly at Bembridge, then to 2 people cut off by the tide at Shanklin and now Yaverland.
Rescue teams have now stood down from Yaverland.
