Chess 960 was recently introduced in the 1st half of the Autumn session of the 4 Seasons Chess Tournaments, organised by VectisChess and held at Shanklin Chess Club.
Chess 960 has all the same rules as classical chess except that in each game the pieces on the back rank are randomly rearranged, therefore, it has no opening moves thus levelling the playing field between the players, no matter what their grading is.
The day proved to be successful, encouraging novice players to join in the fun of a chess competition that is both relaxed and competitive at the same time, but very much a social event, fundraising for the independent self-funding charity Age Concern 50 Plus Centre in Shanklin.
2 teenagers reached the final 5: 15-year-old Felix Davies and 13-year-old Storm Davies. However, this time in classical chess they lost out to the age and experience of the other 3 players. 3rd place went to Mervyn Luscombe of the Ryde Library Club; Philip Kennerley took 2nd and Paul Smith 1st.
The next meeting of the 4 Seasons Chess Tournaments will be the Winter session on 2nd December. For details contact [email protected].
