More than £10,000 was raised for Mountbatten Isle of Wight at a charity cricket tournament to celebrate the life of well-known Island cricketer and solicitor Ian Heal on the first anniversary of his death at the age of just 50.
The tournament – organised by his club, Carisbrooke High School Old Boys, and his family – attracted a crowd of well over 500 people, including some who had travelled from across England, Scotland and the Netherlands.
Teams were made up of Ian’s family, friends from his Carisbrooke High School Old Boys CC, university, Isle of Wight law society and Porchfield CC, who generously hosted the day.
Money was raised through donations, an all-day barbecue, sales of cakes and sweets and a grand raffle, made up of more than 100 prizes generously donated by local businesses and friends.
The winners of the Ian Heal Celebration Cup were Porchfield CC, with the cup presented by members of Ian’s family.
However, as Ian would say, “cricket was the winner” with so many people coming together to celebrate his life.
A spokesman for the club said:
“Ian’s family and friends are delighted that such a huge amount of money has been raised for Mountbatten Isle of Wight, as this will enable others receive the same amazing care that Ian and his family did.”
