Sandown Town Council commemorated the centenary of the death of Corporal A J Hamm at Sandown Christ Church Churchyard this morning (Monday).
Corporal Hamm served in the Royal Field Artillery and received the Croix de Guerre from the Belgium Government, awarded for bravery or other military virtue on the battlefield.
Town Mayor Gary Young said:
“It is important for us to recognise the sacrifices of former residents in the Great War, and this commemoration highlights the events of 100 years ago and the contribution that was made”.
Rev Williams added:
“In the year when the 75th Anniversary of VE Day will be celebrated, and commemorated, we have worked with the Town Council to produce commemorative cards of the 18 Commonwealth War Graves in the Churchyard”.
In addition to the 18 Commonwealth burials from World War I, there are 2 further burials from World War II, and a French Sailor.
Cllr Young concluded:
“The Town Council are working with the Church, local school and other community groups, to develop heritage projects across the Town, and the commemoration of earlier conflicts are a part of this commemoration”.
