Nearly 10,000 people on the Island described their health as ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’ in the latest census, new data has revealed.
In data collected on the most recent census in 2021, around 1.3% of Islanders admitted their health was ‘very bad’, with around 4.5% describing their own health as marginally better, or ‘bad’.
Despite those scores, the amount of Island residents who described their health as ‘very good’ has risen by 0.7% from 43.1% in 2011 to 43.8% in the latest data. This is around 56,000 people.
This positive figure though is still some way off the 58% of residents of Kensington and Chelsea who said their health as ‘very good’, with it likely the Island figures are heavily impacted by the Isle of Wight’s ageing population.
The place in the UK that has the highest percentage of people who described their health as ‘very bad’ is Tower Hamlets with 2.5% of the population stating as such.
All responses to the data have been made by individuals who were asked to rate their health on a scale of 1-5. No scientific reasoning is included in the dataset

gotta keep up the pretence. ..don’t want to risk the benefits being stopped for actually being healthy
So in your world anyone that is unwell with a critical condition is a lair. Well done. Let me know when you’re next at the doctors so I can come and point at you and call you a lair.
You are going to call wighter a “lair”
a place where a wild animal, especially a fierce or dangerous one, lives.
talk about making yourself look daft with that response Fred.
wighter is right though.
To lazy to get out of bed and make a living. It’s to easy for these slobs to just claim benefits and get cash in hand work. How does someone that supposedly cannot work, get a Range Rover?
It is know on social estates now, that the way to get given mobility car allowance and disability allowance is by ‘using’ mental health as the excuse.
Back ache has been sussed by DHSS, by having trained people check on such, yet with mental illness issues such as anxiety, depression etc, now that ‘society’ has made such ‘acceptable’ the low life are cashing in on such in a massive way.
Hence the NHS has had to input millions into such.
So hard to prove, so easy to fake, hence the latest scam along with ‘mould’ claims.
I know these people so FACT.
I know that many ARE genuine but many more now AREN’T
You’ve absolutely ‘nailed’ it Alan. So many have not a single ‘work ethic’ bone in their bodies. Mental Health issue is now the new ‘bad back’. These people who ‘fake’ mental health issues are a scurge in society. They need to be professionally assessed, if found to be lying, stop benefits immediately. They’ll have to get a job won’t they and work for their money like the rest of us.
There are no ‘professionals’ on the IW, that IS the problem !
Local Mental health on the island are not fit for purpose imo.
Only a few then ‘desribe’ their health is pretty good
Why is the Headline not “Census data reveales around 56,000 islanders describe their health as very good and their numbers are rising”? Are all media manic pessimists?
No surprise there with the long lasting side effects of Covid and inability to actually see a GP along with onward referrals to Specialists. I should imagine it is worse on Mainland.
With their bad health we don’t want them working to many hours and have their benefits cut
So many comments from the Tory bigots who only have hate.
plenty of sap comments from the hand wringing, apologist do gooders that also sponge off the state.
Ok let’s generalise. My political hero is Thatcher that means you work hard, get on in life and create a comfortable life for yourself and your family, zero reliance on the state. The explosion of the welfare system happened in 97 when Blair and Brown took charge, they created a something for nothing culture where people breed like rabbits and expect the state to pay. These state dependent losers are the haters, spineless, weak degenerates. Look closer to home leftie.
Tory boy, you sound like a right Banker imo…..!
Probably all Vax related injuries
