A catamaran that accidentally ran aground at Freshwater Bay was towed to the safety of Yarmouth Harbour by Freshwater Independent Lifeboat last night (Wednesday).
Shortly after rescuing a kayaker stuck on the rocks, the volunteer crew members of Freshwater Lifeboat were once again rushing to the aid of seafarers.
The casualty vessel’s engine had failed and the sails had become tangled. However, 2 crew members on board the inshore lifeboat were able to quickly assist in getting the catamaran back out into deeper water.
Although the vessel was able to deploy its anchor, it was felt that due to an approaching gale it would be a wise move to tow the twin-hulled boat to Yarmouth Harbour.
The Spirit of West Wight III – Freshwater’s main lifeboat – was duly launched and towed the catamaran around the coast.
Unfortunately, whilst the tow was underway the catamaran’s dinghy broke free. Freshwater’s inshore lifeboat was launched for a second time and was able to recover the dinghy back to the shore.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team met with the catamaran at Yarmouth.
