Students at Carisbrooke College are celebrating what Executive Headteacher Peter Shaw has described as ‘a really encouraging set of GCSE results’.
There have been some excellent individual results for a number of students with several gaining the new ‘9’ as well as the more traditional A*. All the results give the majority of students an excellent opportunity to continue the studies post 16.
Twins Joseph and Anna Rice (pictured left) almost mirrored each other’s results and best friends Milly, Lily and Charlotte were also very pleased with their individual results. These 3 girls have undertaken their school journey together with the 3 of them starting primary school at Nine Acres Primary, Newport in the same reception class and continuing to be in school together for all their school days.

Peter Shaw has today (Thursday) said:
“Our students and staff, right across the Island Innovation Federation, have worked incredibly hard for a significant period of time now and the improvement is there for all to see. This year we have seen new examinations as well as a new grading system in English and Maths.
“In any time of change, it is important not to lose sight of the simple fact that great teaching and committed students will always be key to success and we have plenty of evidence of that here today. This is my last GCSE results day in the UK and I am very proud to leave our learning community on such a positive note.
“We now look forward to seeing many of our students, as well as those from elsewhere on the island, coming to our dedicated Sixth Form Campus in September. We already have nearly 280 applications for Year 12 and I`m sure that number will increase following this really encouraging set of GCSE results for both Carisbrooke and Medina College”.
The Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Paul Brading, has congratulated students across the Island for their performance in their GCSE examinations.
Cllr Brading said:
“I’d like to congratulate all of our Island GCSE pupils for their hard work, dedication and achievement.
“Whilst this year’s results cannot be compared with previous years due to the changes in grading, early indications are that Island pupils have risen to the challenge, achieving results that will help them to move towards the futures they want; into further education opportunities, training or to work.
“There have been lots of changes for this cohort of pupils to adapt to, not just the change in grading for English and Maths, but also the more demanding content that was introduced nationally from September 2015 and the way in which it’s examined. Our young people have done exceptionally well to take up this challenge.
“Due to the changes in grading this year, the ability to fairly compare this year’s results with past years is challenging. However; early indications from schools on the Island suggest that the underlying trend in outcomes will be stronger than previous years.
“We are committed to delivering educational excellence on the Island and early indications from this year’s GCSE results suggest that further improvements have been secured. With that in mind, I’d like to thank our dedicated school staff; our teachers and support staff, who have helped and guided pupils towards their individual successes this year.”
