If you’re heading out to the shops or your local fast food chain this evening (Thursday) you might want to take some loose change with you as card payments are down across the country.
Lidl in Shanklin and Newport, McDonalds in Ryde and Newport and KFC in Lake and Newport are all unable to accept card payments at this time.
It is thought that stores nationwide have been hit with the technical fault, which means it is cash-only for the time being.
It is unclear at this moment in time how many other retailers have been affected by the outage and it is unknown when things will return to normal.
Do you know a shop that is having issues with card payments tonight? Comment below to let others know…

Who uses cash these days? It’s all cards or phone’s etc… companies going to lose out big time tonight then.
a cashless society with a payment systems failure will resort to theft to obtain good and services, within minutes for emergency needs and hours for food if no shopping had been done.
More than a days worth of an outage, will see a near collapse of society, with rampant theft as the only alternative to digital payments.
No one will turn up for work either, as they may not be getting paid.
A cashless society, will need an offline back up for transactions in the event of an outage, with the system provider having to pay for any losses incurred.
Charity collectors rely on the generosity of people putting cash in their boxes. Yes, some charities do use card machines now but the bulk of local collections are still cash based. As treasurer of a local charity I am very conscious of how much our donations have dropped as more people rely on cards and not cash. There are also some bus companies who deliberately demand the exact fare or no change is given. Getting change is not easy.
And what about cash machines? Are they still working? And the banks want us to switch to cashless payments and are doing their best to make it hard to get cash, especially change. We go cashless and the card system fails, will the shops take I.O.U.s in exchange for goods?
Cash rules. Never use a card.
Now doubt someone was ‘improving’ the software
I always have cash on me. I love a wedge of cold hard cash in my pocket 🙂 Gives me a sense of security and the ability to strike an immidiate bargain.
Technology failure wouldn’t catch me out like that.
Also, nothing worse than looking at a three mile long bank statemenet. Messy.
Sad that cash machines are dissapearing at an alarming rate and a cashless society is a scary proposition.
Cash is King. Always will be.
that is correct, however, the definition of cash has changed. Now it is digital cash as well as physical. If you have a cashless system, then the system becomes a closed loop, as no one can ever withdraw money from it (except the central bank).
The general public will only be able to transfer money from one account to another – (your account to tesco’s account if you shop there etc). you will be able to change banks, however, you will only be able to transfer your money and not withdraw it.
All transactions, even paying a mate to do a bit of work, or giving your kids birthday money, will be electronic transfers, that can be tracked and monitored by the tax authorities. – This is full on monitoring by the tax office and will bring in billions in previously untaxed income.
your daily routines can be monitored by the authorities using your card purchases and transaction records. No more sneaking around anonymously on public transport using cash.
This is big brother on a very sneaky level.
Hate the thought of going out without cash money. Focuses my spending as well.
Coop in Shanklin and rude have both been affected by debit cards
