Emergency service personnel are on scene in Newport Town Centre this afternoon (Monday) where a car has come to rest on its side after crashing at a ‘notorious’ junction. Island Echo understands that the incident occurred near the Lugley Street and St James’ Street junction and has seen a Mini Cooper overturn, coming to rest on its side after colliding with another vehicle – believed to be a VW Transporter – using the notorious crossroads. Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are on scene alongside paramedics from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, having been called at just after 12:00. A single Newport-based fire appliance is on scene too in the interests of scene safety. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being. Southern Vectis Route 1 buses are currently diverting both inbound and outbound.
UPDATE @ 12:40 – The occupant of the vehicle has been helped from the stricken motor and passed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. It#s understood local builders helped shore up the vehicle using wooden chocks. The road is expected to remain closed until recovery is arranged.

Cheaper to wait for failures than to prevent them. Tory Brittan where everything including the kitchen sink has been sold to foreign companies. When WW3 starts (clock is ticking) our enemies will turn it all off. Try to fight a war with no water, gas or energy. Well done Tories, you undermined our security for a quick buck.
Don’t forget telecomms, television and distribution networks
Why do you blame the Tories (for doing what Tories do)? Blame the people who voted for them and keep voting for them.
Hallelujah!! That’s been stinking for YEARS! About bloody time.
And because of the bad management of Southern water we get poop in our rivers and sea aswell as a hike in water bills, totally useless again southern water management on silly money for rubbish service!!
The road doesn’t need closing so that southern water employees can have convenient parking. Wonder how much it costs per day to hire a parking space I.e. a whole road! Park in the field ffs.
I got my 4 wheel drive quad bike with off road tyres stuck in that field last week. It’s way too wet for vehicles. Especially the big bowsers that are constantly coming in and out of the site.
