A car has careered into railings on the main Sandown to Shanklin road this evening (Wednesday).
The Suzuki SX4 was travelling towards Shanklin from Lake when it crashed into the railings just after Skew Bridge at shortly before 20:35.
The driver has escaped injury.
Police are in attendance and the road has been closed in both directions whilst recovery is arranged.
Motorists are being diverted via Green Lane. Southern Vectis Route 3 buses are on diversion.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the driver from Regent Street, Shanklin, who is suspected of speeding, has been reported for summons for driving without due care and attention.
The road remains closed whilst recovery gets underway.
UPDATE @ 22:13 – The road has now reopened.

Oh god 10 weeks off traffic lights there then so they can fix and paint the railings
Wouldn’t surprise me.
So many Drivers need to have refresher courses.
Any damage caused to railings should be claimed from drivers insurance,
not from our Council Taxes.
Not a refresher courses. What’s needed is a full retest every 3 years and that’s for every island driver
Who are ‘they’? 10 weeks really? A fatuous comment but worthy of Island Echo comments section. Congrats.
Agreed. 10 weeks is nonsense. It will be at least 4 months.
Best you go and have a lay down now snowflake You must be shattered after your comment of no significance.
Another normal day on our roads, could have killed someone, but idiots don’t care…
Smoke weed every day
You need too stop it then….live life without taking poison, you will feel much better…
ONG! I prefer speed
Born again Isle of Wight’r then…
