UPDATED: A burst water main on a stretch of road in Ryde that has been hampered by months of water main replacement work has caused the partial collapse of the carriageway this evening (Monday).
With the water rising through the tarmac and the road flooding fast, Island Echo responded to the scene shortly after 21:20 before witnessing a Southern Vectis double decker bus pass over the section of carriageway outside Jewson Morey’s, with the road collapsing underneath the weight of the vehicle forcing the immediate emergency closure of the road between Monkton Street and High Street, Oakfield.
As previously reported by Island Echo, work originally meant for completion before Christmas on St Johns Hill carried on into March bringing a total of 6 months of disruption to motorists, with the disruption returning tonight with the road now closed in both directions until at least tomorrow morning.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 15:40 – St John’s Hill will reopen at 16:00 this afternoon after being closed for more than 16 hours.
It is understood that further disruption will be brought to the area when the work previously completed is dug up and overhauled following the identification of a fault with the water pipes laid between October and March.
Motorists are being diverted via East Hill Road whilst work by Clancy Docwra on behalf of Southern Water is undertaken to rectify the fault and re-stablise the carriageway.
Residents in the area may be experiencing a loss of water pressure or discoloration to the supply.
