The Royal Navy’s Bomb Disposal Team were mobilised to East Cowes Esplanade earlier this morning (Thursday) following the discovery of what was thought to be a piece of explosive ordnance.
Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were initially tasked to the seafront area by Solent Coastguard at around 20:30 last night. A concerned member of the public had reported finding what they thought was a 2ft-long artillery shell, but with an incoming tide the CROs they were unable to ascertain exactly what had been discovered.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were requested to attend at first light today with the Portsmouth-based team arriving on scene around 05:30. Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were also re-deployed to the Esplanade.
Initial examinations quickly identified the object as being a concrete bollard, not a shell.
The incident was brought to a close by 06:30.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
