Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts and HM Coastguard are on the ground in Totland this afternoon (Sunday).
The discovery of what is thought to be a piece of ordnance on the shore at Totland Bay has prompted the deployment of the Portsmouth-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
Island Echo understands that The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were initially mobilised to the area yesterday afternoon and have since returned to assist their Royal Navy colleagues in disposing of the object.
There is no wider threat to the community.
UPDATE @ 21:40 – It has been confirmed that 2 pieces of ordnance have been destroyed by means of a controlled explosion.
According to Needles CRT, a member of the public discovered 2 objects whilst beach combing to the west of Totland Bay yesterday afternoon.
Coastguard Officers were deployed to the scene and the objects were successfully found before being photographed. Arrangements were then made to meet the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team this afternoon to assess the ordnance at low tide.
Bomb Disposal experts deemed the objects as being live and as a result they were taped together, secured in a bag and carried out into the tide where a controlled explosion was carried out.
Both teams cleared the scene by 18:45.
