A boat has ploughed straight into the cliffs at Totland Bay this evening (Saturday).
The incident, that occurred at 21:17, has seen a boat come to rest at the foot of the cliff near the Headon Warren viewpoint, leaving those on board stranded.
The RNLI Lifeboat from Yarmouth has been launched to the scene to assist the severely damaged vessel and its multiple casualties.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Ventnor have also been called to the scene to assist the rescue efforts from dry land. They have been joined by Police and crews from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service too.
The Coastguard Helicopter has also been drafted in to assist the efforts due to the hard to reach location of the incident.
The crew aboard the RNLI lifeboat from Yarmouth have launched their Y-boat allowing them to get closer to the casualties on the shore.
UPDATE @ 22:10 – The Coastguard 175 extraction is currently taking place with a winch man traversing down to the boat.
UPDATE @ 22:12 – A paramedic is now on board the boat tending to the casualties.
UPDATE @ 22:22 – Isle of Wight Police have confirmed that they are assisting the Coastguard in their investigation of the incident. It has been described as serious due to multiple casualties.
UPDATE @ 23:50 – Multiple casualties have been lifted from the shore and are being conveyed to HM Coastguard’s Lee-on-Solent base were they will be met by ambulance crews.

It just jumped out in front of me. Honest gov!!
More elderly sailors will be along soon, probably had the lights of the lighthouse in their eyes.
Been drinking at ‘ The Hut ‘??
Bloody idiots. No sympathy, just damn lucky we have a coast guard.
Really unfair comment to make mate. That’s someone’s family members.
Have a thought that had there been a boat at anchor in totland bay, as there often is in decent weather, these idiots could have run down and killed other people??
Thankfully they are the victims of their own stupidity and didnt take anyone else with them, I stand by my comments.
I have witnessed first hand the irresponsibility of the champagne Charlie’s and lives put at risk by them, only for them to laugh it off as a nothingness.
The sea is not a play ground for idiots, this is the end result.
First thing i thought shouldnt be allowed get on their boats after drinking . Isnt there any law for that .
Did they not see the lighthouse further down?
Have some respect, after seeing the resources at Yarmouth, 2 coast guard teams, 2 ambulances, several police cars and the lifeboat going back out again it’s not time for stupid comments! @ 23.15
I believe the comments are aimed at those on board the vessel that” ploughed straight into the cliffs” not the rescue services. The only disrespect is for the boat crew not the rescue services
Social media does not know the meaning of respect, it allows people to comment without the fear of being identified and to say what they would never have the bravery to say to an individual’s face.
Just cowards behind a screen.
Says anonymous Kev…..
Everyone has a right to an opinion; social media is used to abuse all too often, comments based on lack of information or simply to abuse and cause distress are unacceptable.
You kev2 have not abused me, you have made a comment and I respect where you are coming from.
Diamond races made a very reasonable comment and requested respect after comments made with no knowledge of events, which is all too often on social media, made by those with no knowledge of events, I class that as abuse from ” cowards behind a screen.
Another nosey Parker no doubt you was just walking the dog as it happened SAD
Has and one on this website ever heard of a boat owner in such a serious accident ever been breath tested for alcohol and drug wiped for cannabis and / or cocaine when ploughing straight into a cliff? Especially with on board radar and so many people on board? Probably all got there heads down doing multiple lines of gear and quaffing shed loads of crystal and Bollinger to even notice.
Just a thought???
You should write fiction… ” I can see it all in my mind’s eye, Bunty get in here I need you to take dictation, before the inspiration goes… once upon a time…” – perhaps the navigator had a stroke at the wheel, any number of things, including you are disrespecting multiple casualties and the rescue services as an excuse for entertainment, “Just a thought!”
Had a stroke at the wheel you say ?
So you are implieing that there were prostitutes on board ?
There are no legal alcohol limits for boats. Some places (Thames) has by-laws outlawing it, but not the open sea.
Also no need for a licence or training. You can (if you have the money) blow a £million on a flash boat and take it to sea with out any prior experience.
Stupid, I know, but that’s the way it is.
Just because you don’t need a license to drive a small boat, or just because you maybe ignorant of the law does not exempt you from that law…. There are many rules and regulations regarding boating, collision avoidance and safety at sea, in certain circumstances stiff penalties, including custodial sentences can be metered out…
Even though licence aren’t required. One need to be responsible and know the ropes. There are signals, signs and buoys on the river and the coast day/ night lots of people tend to ignore. Some don’t plan a route looking at tides at different destinations, the weather and most important, day light. If you’ve got electronics and the knowledge to anchor nothing is avoidable and the stress is on the RNLI WHOM do a brilliant job, (need for donation) ,to be able to save more lives on the water. No excuse for running into a cliff or aground unless all on board were gassed and fainted. The cap and crew to be investigated. Never underestimate the power of the sea and a boat. Don’t go out unless you are 200% ,if not pray the RNLI get to you on time.
Simple answer yes.
Although reality is it’s less likely than if you were involved in a road collision where it is mandatory to provide a sample.
If on the other hand you are a professional mariner, ie, licensed to carry passengers, you will most certainly have provide evidence to clear your name.
Yes people have been fined for being over the limit.
Oh no! Could only happen on the IOW. Plenty of accidents on the roads, now in a boat crashing into a cliff!!! Obviously novice seafarers.
Oh what a relief, thought might need to investigate and gather facts; job done, next..
And I thought the road traffic was bad ! Couldn’t make it up if you tried . Go to spec savers ?
Perhaps immigrants ?… Multiple casualties ….
Couldn’t be, according to this lot, they can do no wrong. Beeb has done a good brainwashing job to those who as yet, live, well away from the masses.
In response to clever clogs Clive, it’s not a measure of me writing fiction, it’s just straight up fact that sailing your boat straight into a huge cliff surely shows some sort of undue care and attention.
In our modern day of technology you should know where you are and where you are going when at sea. If the captain had a medical episode then one of the multiple people on board could have turned a wheel to steer away from an on coming cliff? No? As for your minds eye that is located between your arse cheeks, slightly above where you talk out of, I have the upmost respect for our rescue services, all of them combined as well as the injured parties. It’s just you that’s living in fantasy land with your head up your mind eye comments.Clive
Well said, The blokes a plonker !
Stupid name ” Clive ” anyway.
Had they been under the unfluence ?
