The troubled Blackwater Mill Care Home on the outskirts of Newport is to close its doors following a turbulent period.
Buckland Care says that the decision to close the home, off Blackwater Hollow, has been ‘incredibly difficult’, but ongoing financial pressures have forced their hand.
The pressures have been brought about amid challenges arising from appalling regulatory inspections – both by the CQC and Environmental Health.
The situation is such that Blackwater Mill can no longer continue operating in the current circumstances.
It’s said that the home will soon be taken over by a new provider with a new management team in place, with a full refurbishment of the care home expected to be carried out ahead of a reopening later in 2025.
Residents will now have to find alternative places to live.
The family of one of those affected has told Island Echo:
“I do not believe for a moment that Buckland Care are struggling financially. They simply aren’t interested in carrying out the work that needs to be done following the damning CQC report.
“They have messed the residents and their families about throughout the whole CQC business, going through three ‘managers’ in six months.
“The whole process has been handled dreadfully, both by the home and by social services, who told us our relatives were going to be moved out, then said no that was a mistake and they were going to stay, and now are saying again that they will be moved out to other homes.
“It’s a disgrace”.
A spokesperson for Buckland Care has said:
“Our priority is ensuring that every resident is supported in finding a suitable new placement. The home will remain open until this process is complete, and we are working closely with families and the local authority to make each move as smooth and carefully managed as possible.
“We understand how unsettling this will be, and we are truly sorry for the
disruption and distress this may cause”.
It’s not surprising it has been closed.
Let’s hope the new organisation makes a better job of caring for it’s residents and the environment they live in
I cant fault my mums care there, i speak as i find, staff there are lovely from carers, cleaners, laundry, dining room, cooks, gardener, office staff etc, im always made welcome, iv had meals with mum at short notice, her room is always clean and the twice daily activities are varied and much enjoyed, Mum is happy there, sadly now facing being unsettled as she will have to have another placement,
Why don’t their families take them in,
so easy to offload their parents, very sad.
Many families don’t mind showing up for inheritance though!
