Reports of multiple people in the water calling for help in Sandown Bay have led to the tasking of Bembridge RNLI this afternoon (Monday). Island Echo understands 3 people and their dog were all aboard a kayak when it capsized off Yaverland, prompting emergency calls to HM Coastguard. Bembridge’s D-class inshore lifeboat is now on scene having left the boathouse at Lane End shortly before 17:00. Coastguard Rescue Officers from nearby Bembridge have also been tasked to the scene, rendezvousing at Yaverland Car Park. Thankfully, all casualties are now safely on the shore after Sandown Beach Lifeguards rushed to the casualties’ aid. It’s understood that members of the public have also assisted in the rescue, ahead of the arrival of the lifeboat.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
