After 32 years of service to the local community, Watch Manager Simon Fyrth is retiring from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Simon joined the team at Bembridge Fire Station in October 1988 before becoming a leading firefighter in July 2001. He has been the station’s Sub Officer (and latterly Watch Manager) since February 2006.
WM Fyrth is known as one of the more rememberable characters of the fire service, distinct on the radio for his ‘rural’ accent and for the use of his beret when off duty as a self-employed builder.
Over the past 3 decades, Simon has attended a number of notable incidents, from aircraft down at the local airport to houseboat fires and floods.
Simon has served as the local Fire Brigade Union (FBU) rep for Bembridge Fire Station and has helped shaped many on-call policies for his role within the Retained Duty System Focus group.
Away from the emergency response, Simon has supported the local village organising an appliance for the annual street fair, fetes and community safety events. He was also keen to promote a social environment for station personnel and their families, including the annual Christmas event with general knowledge quiz of epic proportions.
Group Manager Jeff Walls has said:
“Thanks for your 32 years of dedicated serve Simon, you will be greatly missed”.
