On Wednesday 5th June, three Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team members competed in the 4th round of the Omega Portsmouth Circuit League.
In the first race of the evening, Kev Foster lined up in the combined 3rd & 4th category race. This race was 45 minutes plus 3 laps of the 500 metre track. Foster looked strong from the offset and tried attacking several times but none were successful. Coming into the bunch sprint, Foster unfortunately followed the wrong wheel and ended up being boxed in with no clear line to get through to the front. He finished safely within the bunch.
In the second race of the evening, Sam Baker and James Ebdon competed in the Elite, 1st and 2nd category race. This was 55 minutes plus 5 laps of the track. Racing against several big teams, the pair had their work cut out from the start and were made to chase several breakaway attempts.
Finally, once the peloton were all together, Baker and Ebdon attacked off the front and formed their own breakaway with one other elite rider. The trio soon had a 200 metre gap but unfortunately were reeled back in by the bunch. 5 other riders counter attacked as soon as Baker and Ebdon were caught and soon gained a lap on the field.
Coming into the sprint finish, Baker was near to the front of the bunch but was held up by slower riders in front of him. Ebdon managed to find a clear path through and used his sprint and racer’s brain to good effect by taking 2nd in the sprint and 7th overall. Baker was close behind in 11th place.
