Last week the National Education Union wrote to employers notifying their intention to carry out national ballots of around 300,000 teacher and support staff members in England and Wales.
The ballots ask “Are you prepared to take strike action in furtherance of this dispute?”. Each dispute is about the failure to give a commitment for a fully funded above-inflation pay rise (as measured by September 2022 RPI).
Peter Shreeve, Assistant District Secretary of the National Education Union said:
“Many island members have already told us they have voted and shared social media pictures doing so.
‘Teachers have told us the reasons for voting – pay and workload. Schools should not be considering staff cuts to fund any pay rise. It must be fully funded by Government.
‘Neither should education staff be facing another real-terms pay cut. Teachers have lost 20% in real terms since 2010; support staff loss stands at 27%.
Ballots opened on 28th October and will close on 13th January 2023. Dates for potential strike action are as yet undecided but are likely to start the week commencing 30th January 2023.

Cry me a river – teachers get enough as it is. All they are doing is looking for another excuse not to be at work.
private sector small and medium sized companies are struggling, cant afford pay rises, staff are already being paid far less than teachers, who are, by and large, just a bunch of hand wringing lefties that are more worried about gender ideology than actually teaching kids.
private sector unemployment is starting to go up.
all public sector pay rises are paid for by the taxpaying, private sector who see their bills such as council tax, corporation tax etc rise to cover these whingers.
teachers need to learn to cut costs -if they cant afford their exorbitant mortgage, mobile phone or expensive car, then cut back.
I couldn’t agree more. This country is in real trouble.
Couldn’t have put it better myself. With the teaching staff schools have these days, I feel sorry for the kids. Their future is very bleak due to the brain washing they are getting.
Gender ideology? I’ll bet you watch GB news. Teachers do what they are asked to do by your government. The one you lot voted for. Next
I can tell you don’t work in a school.
Many Primary schools, and yes even some of those here on the Island, get visits from organisations such as Stonewall and similar to talk to the children about LGBQ+ ‘issues’ etc.
Generally, it’s not the teachers ‘teaching’ it, but outside people brought in to talk to the children.
So, it’s not something ‘made up’ on GB News, but a fact. Ask at your local school if you don’t believe it.
The bit you are missing is that they also get visits from other organisations:
Schools invite people from both ends of the political spectrum to talk to kids. Singling out those you disapprove of as though they are the only ones and painting it as some kind of planned indoctrination is grossly misleading.

Drivel – teachers have allowed gender ideology groups and critical race theory zealots into the schools to preach their dross. Schools and other organisations all stupidly signed up to stonewalls propaganda machine. That is not part of the law on education.
finally we are seeing this carp coming to an end, with tavistock gender clinic closed, court cases pending and the backlash against all this hand wringing drivel gaining ground.
next up – just stop oil dimbo’s to be told – protest where it doesn’t affect others or face crippling fines and jail time.
Strange how the trade unions are actually run by Labour Supporters and always have been.
I think they deserve a better deal.
That chip on your shoulder is weighing you down. Take a deep breath and chill out, you’ll make yourself ill.
no kev – no problems here – i guess you are struggling with the heavy weight of jealousy when you see the successful people pass you by and ignore you
With the amount of whining you do about, pretty much, everyone and anyone who isn’t you, I seriously doubt you are in any way successful.
Successful people don’t constantly complain about people getting money and services that aren’t due to them in the way you do. Only bitter and twisted failures do that. Successful people don’t care if someone visiting a food bank has an iPhone or is getting a few pounds in benefits.
Only failures whine about people getting handouts.
People are so quick to judge, and it’s doubtful any of those doing the judging have set foot in a school in the last 40 years.
Teachers are essential to the future of this country, they deserve every right to be paid fairly for the job they do, as does everyone else that does the essential but often overlooked jobs. Carers, NHS workers, bin men, teachers, bus drivers, retail wokers, these are the people that run this country yet get paid far less than they should.
Good luck to them.
So, Isle of Wighter. What does a teacher earn? You’ve got no real idea I’m guessing.
If the hours worked by most teachers are averaged out over the year, they are paid less than the minimum wage per hour. And do spare me the ‘long holidays’ trope. You have no idea. And yes: young teachers – the future – do have exorbitant mortgages because that’s the world now, much of it courtesy of this Tory cabal.
if a young teacher is stupid enough to take out a mortgage without factoring in the possibility of interest rate rises and inflation then they really ought not to be teachers.
anyone with half a brain knows that interest rates and inflation have been significantly below the normal levels for years and would at some point revert to normal levels. Why don’t you look up interest rates in the late 1980s – you will see they were around 15%
People including teachers need a roof over their heads, most people would like to have a mortgage rather than pay rent, the most reasonable property costs an enormous amount.
Please do inform us of your solution to the problem.
The insults you come out with really do show people what a thoroughly disgusting individual you are, so full of hate over and over again.
Nurses all out to screw the public where the money will have to come from.
No mention of the fact that the NHS contributes up to 20% towards their pension, no mention they get 27 days holiday on starting in nursing, no mention they get full sickness pay, no mention nurses get
child care benefits plus many high street discounts, no mention nurses are able to get good flexibility to fit in with their home life.. What a poor badly treated lot they are!!
Look at the island’s GCSEs results and adjust pay accordingly. Kids are inadequately prepared in primary schools and from there on the trend continues.
