10 precious little ducklings have been rescued after their mother was tragically killed on the outskirts of Newport.
Quick-thinking volunteers from Friends of the Animals, alongside passing motorists, helped to prevent the youngsters from wandering into fast-moving traffic on Long Lane earlier today (Wednesday).
The Friends of the Animals team was alerted via a Facebook message reporting that tiny ducklings were on the road following the death of their mother.
On arriving at the scene, volunteers found the mother duck dead in the grass alongside the road. Believing the ducklings would be nearby, they searched through the surrounding bushes but initially had no success.
During a break in the traffic, the rescuers heard faint cheeping and were able to pinpoint the ducklings’ location. Hidden amongst the roadside weeds, the 10 youngsters were discovered just metres from the carriageway.
Fearing the ducklings could wander into the path of passing vehicles, the volunteers called on Claire, known as Florence NightinGULL, from Skippers Sanctuary, for assistance.
On Claire’s arrival, 1 rescuer temporarily stopped the traffic while the others carefully caught all 10 ducklings, ensuring they were safely removed from danger.
The ducklings are now in Claire’s care before being transferred to Nikki, affectionately described as the ‘fairy duck mother’, where they will continue to be looked after.
The Friends of the Animals volunteers have thanked the motorists who patiently stopped to allow the rescue to take place safely.
