A badger was rescued after falling into a 5ft-deep hole on a building site near Ventnor yesterday (Wednesday).
The young badger was found at the bottom of an uncovered hole and was safely rescued by volunteers from Badger Trust Isle of Wight.
Despite the fall, the animal was alert and able to move, but had sustained a wound to its rump.
The badger was taken to The People’s Vet in Newport, where it was assessed and given appropriate care. After receiving treatment, food and water, the animal spent the afternoon resting.
It was successfully released back into the wild last night.
A spokesperson for Badger Trust Isle of Wight has expressed gratitude to both The People’s Vet for their swift assistance and Friends of the Animals for covering the veterinary costs.
They have also reminded developers and landowners of the importance of covering holes and trenches at construction sites to prevent harm to wildlife.
Badger Trust Isle of Wight has said:
“Tricky rescue this morning which shows the importance of covering trenches/holes on building sites.
“Fortunately, after dropping into this 4-5ft deep hole, this little one was ok, but was checked out at the vets and given TLC for a rump wound.
“After a drink of water and eating some food, this little one spent the afternoon asleep before being successfully released back this evening.
“Many thanks to The People’s Vet for seeing this little one so quickly, and also to Friends of the Animals for covering the vet bill – it’s greatly appreciated.”

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE!
Well done to all involved in its rescue. Beautiful animals
If you see an injured badger, do not approach or tend it. It will ‘think’ you are a predator & attack you.
Call in the experts.
Great work by the volunteers if the badger could say thanks I’m sure he would
The people whose lawns they dig up might not agree with you?
The hedgehogs won’t though.
Well done to all involved.
Great to see an happy ending.
Pretty irresponsible to leave such a hole open
