A jaywalking badger that crossed the railway track and inadvertently touched the third rail prompted a call out for firefighters from Shanklin this morning (Monday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Sandown Train Station shortly after 08:00 when flames and smoke were spotted coming from the track around 50 metres down the line.
1 appliance from Shanklin was mobilised to the scene where it was discovered a badger had come into contact with the third rail.
Unfortunately, the rail was live and electrocuted the animal resulting in combustion.

RIP my friend
My friend too 🙁
Poor little thing. I guess many of its fellows may know already to keep clear of the third rail.
badgers can count?
Press F to pay respects.
just so everyone’s aware, the funeral will be at the Crem next Thursday 11:40am.
At a discount because he was half cooked
“Resulting in combustion”
Kentucky Fried Badger, anyone?
Is this really news
The rail usually is live
Hmm brer Brock burger .
I am not going to shave this morning in respect (I have a Badger shaving brush). However, IF they had listened to me, and tarmacked over the track and used two shuttle buses this never would have happened.
It would save the huge cost of keeping this ill used rail electrified and fenced to a high degree.
Imagine if a thick Joey type child wanders on the line. People would be late for work etc.
Really! Far more animals die on the roads than on the rails! So rare it makes the news!
Island echo!!
