The former Topshop building in Newport has been transformed with a new café now welcoming customers on the ground floor – with a name you might find familiar.
It was in February 2021 that Topshop fell into administration and the doors to the St James’ Square shop were closed for the last time, after some 30 years in the town.
Plans to inject new life into the prominent building were first revealed in late 2022, with further details emerging in April 2023. Platform One moved its fashion school into the upper reaches earlier this year.
Now, Wadhams has opened – a new café aimed at the Island’s younger generation offering signature blends, baked treats, and a warm atmosphere. It hopes to be a creative and collaborative space for all.
It takes its name from the former furniture shop that once stood proudly in the town centre. For nearly 130 years Wadhams & Sons was a linchpin of the High Street, closing in 1990.
It would be lovely if the Wadham’s clock could be re-instated on the outside of the building.
Great to see businesses opening up,
it’s been a tough 14 years under Tory rule and
it is going to be even tougher under Labour rule.
Let’s hope these businesses succeed.
I like the new Grace the Bakers in Newport, so things are
looking up.
Just need the Council helping businesses by offering
more free parking in Newport.
First Hour free would be nice, then persons could park
go for a coffee then return to their vehicles.
Parking charges add to the cost of the drinks and food.
