The Isle of Wight Council has revealed its provisional term dates for the 2022-23 academic year, with changes planned to the length and date of school holidays.
A document released by the Council today (Monday) reveals plans to continue the 2-week October holiday despite mixed reviews from teaching staff during the consultation period. Leadership teams have expressed concerns that a 2-week holiday in October means that staff and students do not have adequate time off during the Christmas period as a result.
Proposals for a 5 week summer holiday have also been submitted, with the potential for children to return to school on the 30th August 2022 if plans are approved.
One consultation respondent from an Island primary school commented:
“Back to school in August? The younger August-born children already struggle to start school and will still be 3 at this stage.
“School staff do not want to return to school in August.”
If plans get approval from the Cabinet Member, children will return from the Summer Holidays on 30th August, with half term taking place between the 17th and 28th October, and the Autumn term coming to an end of the 21st December – just 4 days before Christmas.
The Spring term will run from the 3rd January until the 31st March, with half-term being in place between 13th February and 17th February. The Summer half term will run between the 29th May and 2nd June, having started on the 17th April and finishing on 21st July.

They should be scrapping some holidays so kids can catch up on being off for practically a year!
School staff do not want to return to school in August.”
cry me a river- the rest of us do not get six weeks off at summer – two if we are lucky and some of us, cannot get time off in the summer, as it is too busy.
get back to work – lazy teachers and stop expecting the entire summer off doing eff all at our expense and then need teacher training days to relearn your job.
Actually not sure entirely about all school staff but lot Vbbb of them still work or do training in summer holidays or still in school building during august . Also depending on schools sen they deserve a break . Also sum of children depending on which school allready return in august this yr on the island as only 5 week holiday this august .
I don’t think Charlie78 is, or was an English teacher. LOL
Who wants or needs two weeks off school in October – go back to six weeks in the summer, when the chances of favourable weather are better- or have a double length half term in Feb with a better chance of finding some snow to play in.
