The National Trust is seeking to install an automated vehicle and pedestrian barrier at the entrance to the Needles Headland Road to prevent unauthorized access.
A planning application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council seeking permission to install the gate and sensor at the start of the access road that leads out to the Needles Battery, overlooking the iconic landmark that is The Needles.
It’s said that the installation of a vehicular and pedestrian gate will reduce the number of vehicles travelling out towards the Battery accidentally or without permission. The gate will not restrict pedestrian access to the site and will continue to allow access for residents, staff and approved vehicles such as tour buses and emergency vehicles.
It is proposed that the 5-bar gate – made out of galvanised steel – will be fully automated.
A similar application was made in 2024 but was withdrawn following concerns raised by Island Roads about the lack of space available to turn a vehicle should it
enter the road by mistake. This new application takes that feedback into account, moving the barrier to the start of the road.
The National Trust says this project will support the charity to manage the special landscape for everyone, forever.
The Isle of Wight Council is expected to make a decision by 3rd April.
Will it restrict the cyclists?
I hope so as they use it as a race track in large groups. I was knocked to the ground from behind by a lycra idiot who did not bother to stop. Yes, IoW council, you can fact check it as I gave all the details to you and the Police. The council reply that “we will improve signage” was a bit lacking. It is as, a matter of fact still designated on the definitive map as a footpath.
I’ve seen idiots on bikes too going so fast down the hill, they seem to think they own the road? No car access no bike access simple we pay b…. road tax etc they don’t do jog on!
And how do they propose to enable disabled drivers and passengers to access the NT properties, as they can now?
