Freshwater Parish Council has launched a creative fundraising initiative to support plans for a new skatepark and pump track on the Isle of Wight, with local artists turning skateboard decks into unique works of art.
The project brings together art, community involvement and youth sport, with a collection of hand-painted decks set to be auctioned online to raise funds for the proposed facility.
An exhibition showcasing the completed artworks will be held at Newport and Carisbrooke Community Centre on 2nd April between 18:30 and 20:30. The display will also celebrate the Isle of Wight’s skateboarding heritage, including well-known locations such as Shide Ramp and Golden Hill Skatepark.
The online auction will run from 1st April through to 9th May, with members of the public able to view the collection and place bids via www.app.galabid.com/freshwater-skatepark/items.
The initiative has already received a boost after securing £20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund, bringing the overall project closer to its funding target. Freshwater Parish Council says it is aiming for construction to begin within the next 12 months.
Kirsty Gibson, Freshwater Parish Council Clerk, has said:
“This project is about more than just fundraising – it’s about bringing the community together, celebrating the Island’s skateboarding heritage, and creating a facility that everyone can enjoy.
“With the support of local artists and The National Lottery, we are closer than ever to making the skatepark a reality.”
Among those contributing is local artist Josh Hibberd, whose piece titled ‘Betty Board’ draws inspiration from the Isle of Wight coastline. Using reclaimed materials, his work reflects both the natural beauty of the seaside and the importance of protecting it from pollution.
