It’s estimated that around 30,000 Islanders have now received their COVID-19 vaccine, marking a real turning point in the Island’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
Although the Government is yet to reveal exactly how many local residents have received their first dose, percentage numbers revealed today (Monday) give us a firm, but unconfirmed, idea. It is already known that over 280,000 people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have been vaccinated, but the figures have not been broken down by local authority area.
It’s said that 86% of the Island’s Over 70s and 93% of the Over 80s have now received their jab. Based on 2011’s census data, that is approximately 19,900 Islanders. It is also known that around 8,000 health and social care staff – and those who support the NHS such as ferry operators – have been vaccinated, taking the estimated total to around 27,900.
It means that approximately 20% of the Island’s total population is now protected in some form, with all Over 70s and the extremely clinically vulnerable expected to have been vaccinated by Sunday.
The Government hopes that all over 50s will be vaccinated by May, paving the way for a Great British Summer on the Isle of Wight. There are around 62,500 people over the age of 50 living on the Island, meaning vaccination centres will have around 10 weeks to jab 40,000 people aged 50-69 – 4,000 people a week. It’s known the Riverside Centre can vaccinate approximately 3,200 people a week on its own.
Once the top 9 cohorts have been completed, 70,000 Islanders will have been vaccinated – 50% of the Island’s population (61% of the adult population). This significantly reduces the risk for those under 50 too.
Across the UK, a staggering 12 million people have now received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine with positive tests, deaths and hospital admissions all falling sharply. Daily cases are back to where they were in the second week of December. Last month it was reported that all Over 18s should be vaccinated by September.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to lay out the Government’s plans for unlocking the country on 22nd February – 2 weeks today – with the current date of 8th March set for unlock. Restrictions across the country are expected to continue until the Summer, but it seems unlikely at this stage that regional tiers will be brought back.

Good news.
Get it right please 22nd February is 2weeks time not 1
Light at the end of the tunnel.
Yes ,that’s the light on the train coming straight at you, and theres now nothing you can do to avoid it! Ha ha ha. Look, just joking. If people feel safer having the vaccine, then go for it, but dont criticize people that dont feel safe and will not have it. Its choice for everyone.
“ but don’t criticize people that don’t feel safe and will not have it”
Says the person that has been criticizing at every opportunity anyone who wants the jab. Don’t even have the balls to use your real name.
Just because you don’t want it does not give you the right to spout false information and lies to try to make others not have it. What you have been doing is despicable!
Criticized people cause they don’t want it,? Yes maybe I’m guilty sometime of that, though frustration may get the better of me, but false information? NO! I have predicted many things that has happened! How? Because I only use and check over and over correct information.! And as for social responsibility? Don’t make me laugh! Once in a life time pandemic!? Get ready for the next one then Dave!
It’s a once in a lifetime pandemic….you have a social responsibility to be vaccinated unless you have bloody good medical reasons not to….you should support the vaccination programme…it’s your duty..both civic and to mankind….
(or is it an infringement of your civil liberties)…
No such thing as social responsibility – everyone has their own lives, their own agenda and their own aims – the common good is all government BS
“No such thing as social responsibility – everyone has their own lives, their own agenda and their own aims – the common good is all government BS”
How many times you used the NHS? How many times have you had help from the police? How many times have you or a friend had their house saved by the fire brigade? How many times has the UK been saved by the armed forces? That is the common good, you self centered cretin. UK stands for United Kingdom. If you don’t like all this unity go do one and move to the middle east. See how far your “survival of the fittest” gets you. The funnest irony, the quote you love to use, coined by Dawin, had a long history of illness. He was repeatedly incapacitated with episodes of stomach pains, vomiting, severe boils, palpitations, trembling and other symptoms. If they lived by your rules you would not have the quote you like to use.
i see you result to insults collins – you have lost the argument already.
there is no unity here – the vast majority of society would pack in their jobs if they won the lottery – so don’t give me this tree hugging, hippy commune unity c rap
Selfish, self centered and I bet you are single and have very little friends.
bit rude micky – assuming my friends aren’t very tall – talk about hypocritical.
Sounds like I hit the nail on the head from that retort.
feeble attempt at dodging the fact that you insulted my friends over their height – typical 1970’s, discriminatory attitude
Every man for himself.
“Once in a lifetime”, I’ve just had a once in a lifetime holiday. – tell you what, never again!
“with all Over 70s and the extremely clinically vulnerable expected to have been vaccinated by Sunday”
Still waiting for an appointment for my first Jab, i’m extremely clinically vulnerable. Getting worried that I will be forgotten.
Phoned the clinic, now have an appointment. Looks like I was not on the list. Anyone else still waiting and in the extremely clinically vulnerable group but under 70 should call their GP to check you are on the list. As a software engineer of over 25 years I have little confidence in their computer systems.
A lot of the under 70’s who are clinically vulnerable were not due to be seen until the over
70’s had been done. I think you were panicking and criticizing prematurely
which often happens with your generation.
You’re making some big assumptions about my age, i’m over 50! I left school in 84 and have worked ever since so wind you neck back in Ron. People with CF were put into group 4, which is 70’s or over, the group they are doing now.

wind your neck in – hark at you – ha ha, who do you think you are, some sort of big shot.
showing your true colours as a weak egotist
you aren’t that smart then richard if you are using your real name, as you have now handed out your age as well – you must be an absolute gold mine for identity thieves.
why do you think the rest of us use fake names
Islander, you use fake names so you can troll, insult and generally wind people up. Sad twerps with nothing better to do.
no tony, it is a sensible strategy to protect your identity. Of course if someone objects to a comment you make and you use your real name, do not be surprised if they turn up on your doorstep or worse, steal your identity and run up bills in your name.
is that because the person who designed and installed the software is on the same capability scale as yourself.
Well I won’t be one of them. I just cannot believe the stupidity of people who would.
Herd stupidity!!
