Writers from across the Isle of Wight are being invited to apply to become the Island’s first ever Poet Laureate in a new 2-year cultural role.
The Isle of Wight Poet Laureate programme has officially launched, offering poets the chance to become a creative ambassador for the Island from 2026 to 2028.
The new role has been created to celebrate the Isle of Wight’s creativity, community spirit and cultural life, with the successful applicant expected to represent the Island through original poetry, public performances and community engagement.
Open to both emerging and established writers, the programme is seeking someone with a passion for language, storytelling and sharing poetry with others.
The chosen Poet Laureate will help capture the spirit of the Isle of Wight through their work, reflecting the Island’s people, places and changing landscape, while also inspiring audiences of all ages.
As part of the role, the successful applicant is expected to engage with the community through schools, libraries, events and other public spaces.
Organisers say the initiative offers a unique opportunity for a local poet to help shape the creative voice of the Isle of Wight and leave a lasting cultural legacy.
The programme is being coordinated by Lemon Jelly Press CIC, with support from Creative Island, the Isle of Wight County Press, Quay Arts Centre and The National Poetry Centre.
