Works to repair and future proof Ryde’s main sewer at Appley have finally been completed, according to Southern Water.
A section of sewer that collapsed back in January of this year was fully repaired several weeks ago, but inspections identified further sections of the critical infrastructure that needed attention. As a result, extra works have been taking place along North Walk since November.
Southern Water has confirmed that the lining and refurbishment of the additional 200m section have been successfully completed and, as a result, normal flows have now been restored to Ryde’s main sewer.
The temporary over-pumping system erected back in February – on hire at a cost of over £25,000 a week – is now being dismantled.
The next phase of works will see the backfilling of the temporary shaft opposite Ryde Inshore Rescue, which was constructed to give us access to repair the collapse.
Teams will return in the New Year to begin reinstatement works to the pavement and road, in partnership with Island Roads and Ryde Town Council. This will mean that the road and car park can finally re-open to the public.
It is planned that the works will be fully completed early in 2022 – potentially by the end of February. However, engineers still don’t fully know what caused the sewer to collapse in the first place, as reported by Island Echo last month.
Southern Water would like to thank locals for their patience and understanding during the works.
