Theatre lovers are in for a treat this September with 2 highly anticipated productions hitting the stage on the Isle of Wight – one a modern comedy from a BAFTA-winning writer, the other a classic operetta packed with song, silliness and sorcery.
From Friday 5th September, The Apollo Players will present The Unfriend by Stephen Moffat at the Apollo Theatre, Newport. Moffat is best known for his award-winning work on Doctor Who and Sherlock.
The Unfriend is a dark comedy that follows Peter and Debbie, who befriend a brash American widow while on holiday. Months later, Elsa unexpectedly invites herself to stay – and only then do the couple discover the horrifying truth about their new friend. With a deadly visitor now en route, the pair are faced with a dilemma: how do you protect your family without being rude?
Performances run from 5th-13th September (excluding Sunday and Monday). Tickets are available online at www.apollo-theatre.org.uk or via the box office on (01983) 210010.
Later in the month, GASP returns with its annual Gilbert and Sullivan production, bringing The Sorcerer to Bembridge Village Hall from 25th-28th September, with evening shows at 19:30 and a Sunday matinee at 14:30.
Set during a village garden party, The Sorcerer tells the story of Alexis and Aline, whose engagement inspires Alexis to spread love throughout the village using a magical potion. But when the spell causes unintended pairings and comedic chaos, it’s up to the characters to sort the magical mayhem.
Packed with vocal harmonies, clever wordplay and musical energy, The Sorcerer promises a fun-filled night for newcomers and Gilbert and Sullivan fans alike.
Tickets can be booked at www.ticketsource.co.uk/gasp or by calling 07761 460925. Please note that pyrotechnics will be used during the show.
