The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been scrambled to Calbourne this evening (Saturday) following an incident which has seen a pedestrian hit by a car.
Emergency service crews were called to the scene on the B3401, near the Elm Lane junction, just after 22:30, with several paramedics from The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rushed to the scene alongside a large Police response from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Island Echo understands that a pedestrian walking along the main road has been hit by a passing car.
As a result of the severity of the incident, the air ambulance has been scrambled, however it is unknown as to exact injuries sustained by those involved.
Having made the trip from their Thruxton base, the helicopter circled the area before landing in the recreation ground opposite The Sun Inn at around 22:50.
The road is currently blocked at the Elm Lane junction and is expected to remain closed for some time.
Traffic using The Middle Road to head to Freshwater is having to divert via Forest Road and Elm Lane.
UPDATE @ 00:20 – The casualty has been flown directly to Southampton General Hospital by the air ambulance.
Island Echo has approached Police for a statement, with further a update expected tomorrow (Sunday).

They need to reduce the Speed Limit to 20mph as you enter the climb over Sun Hill into Calbourne and down past the Pub and Cross Roads until you leave Calbourne heading for Freshwater.
The IOW Council have been warned time and time again about the serious dangers regarding the speeds people come through Calbourne lethal!
There’s children that live in the village – senior citizens etc. It was only a matter of time until some poor person was injured or worst.
IOW Council you should hang your heads in shame!
Get the 20mph signs up and get it done!
Sorry to read this terrible news around what’s happened tonight.
Whilst I agree that something must be done to cap the speeds that some people drive at through these kind of places, I don’t see how reducing it down to 20mph will help. If they’re perfectly happy to drive like a nutcase in a 30mph restriction zone, they’ll happily do it (and would be more likely to do it) when the speed limit has an even tighter restriction.
But we also don’t know what that pedestrian was up to at the time of the collision. I myself had a similar encounter many years ago with a drunkard in the middle of the road in Bowcombe trying to flag down a car. I took him home because I knew he’d get himself killed if he carried on the way he did.
Some drivers will speed whatever the limit, ban those who speed!
The only issue is how many bother to adhere to the speed limits that are already in place. I’m sure all of us see these limits being exceeded every day.Thinking of the person who has been injured and their family.
I hope the person recovers fully.Thankfully we have a amazing air ambulance crew and amazing paramedics. Its really quite dangerous around Calburne and lanes. I’m constantly witnessing cars speeding carelessly around small lanes.
20mph zones are not enforceable only advisory hence no police speed traps in 20mph currently. The legislation only gives 20mph as Advisory but these are not legally enforceable and no calbourne doesn’t need to have speed reduced anyway just for someone that doesn’t know how to walk along a road and be seen!
Unfortunately the way some idiots are using this stretch as a racetrack after dark, I don’t think signs will be enough. Perhaps more drastic traffic calming measures are required, like those on forest road by the school?
Yes, concrete bollards are the only way to slow traffic down
Same Freshwater n it upsets me hearing them life isn’t a computer game!!!
A 20mph limit will be largely ignored. 20 limits on narrow and congested streets (like Brading) are workable because it only takes one vehicle obeying the limit to keep those following to it.
The road through Calbourne is wide and, at the time this accident occurred, there will be little traffic.
And if a speeder does come up behind someone doing 20 they are quite likely to attempt a dangerous overtake.
What is needed is for the current 40mph limit to be properly enforced.
That is ridiculous no need for 20 mph anywhere it’s stupid people that drive there’s a junction there they should slow down anyway.People drive round ryde like bloody idiots especially at night Upton road and west street no police about at night .Hope the pedestrian makes a full recovery
Out at that time? On a Saturday night?! Must have been asking for it.
There was a wedding in the area, have some respect!
As far as I’m aware, it’s perfectly legal to be out at night. Thoughts are with the young man and his family, and wishing him a full, fast recovery
All the comments about speed limits, but there’s nothing to say that speed was a factor.
Who said the motorist was speeding ?
I never see police cameras in that area but quite often at Shalfleet The police would have a field day the speed some drivers go along that stretch of road
This driver wasn’t speeding and the guy who was injured was so drunk dressed in all black. Please don’t be so judgemental, it’s not always the drivers fault. I hope the injured person is OK but I also hope the driver is OK.
