The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been called into action this afternoon (Thursday) and has landed on the playing fields at Ryde School.
The life-saving helicopter is thought to have been requested by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at around 14:30. It landed in Ryde shortly before 15:00.
It is unclear at this time if the incident is at the school or if the air ambulance is simply using the open space as a suitable landing site.
UPDATE @ 15:45 – The air ambulance has now taken off from the school and is conveying a student direct to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
Island Echo understands that the youngster has a suspected broken ankle. Parents have been informed.
The helicopter medics were called in as land ambulances across the Island were prioritised to other calls at the time.

Kid broke his leg at ryde private
Ouchie!
So has is someone hurt there self
Lifesaving? Ok mate
could he not get a lift of a teacher to take him st marys what a joke and waste of money council cannot even pay people there rent
The teacher cannot give pain relief like a crew can / a broken bone can be life threatening & therefore wholly inappropriate to take by car / air ambo is only dispatched when absolutely necessary. I know – I used to dispatch it.
Whilst your response maybe genuine it reads as glib and uncaring.
Well said…. my grandson goes to this school and he noted it was a serious break as is any broken bone on a child
If the fracture is open (broken bones sticking out) or there is ‘critical skin’ (where a bone is on the point of sticking out) or there is no blood supply to the foot owing to compression of nearby arteries or veins or the child is in absolute agony…then an ambulance is essential. The idea of ‘getting a lift from a teacher’ is ridiculous. Council rent has nothing whatsoever in any way to do with a charity funded Air Ambulance.
That was what happened. The bone wasn’t sticking out and the ankle was dislocated
You weren’t there man
You can’t get a lift of a teacher if he isn’t screaming and in agony
Your comment is based on no knowledge and ignorance, pity you were quick to post a comment when you clearly have no idea.
When the original report is limited and open for comment from the public it’s no surprise some comments are misinformed, it would seem it takes time to get the full picture..
It’s a bit like the mainstream UK media, we get a one sided view, the BBC come to mind.
Clare.
Graham Smith is your post a joke? Have you ever suffered a broken leg where the bone has pierced the skin ? It was absolutely the right thing to call an ambulance and get the student the medical attention needed. Instead of worrying about your housing benefit being received on time, how about you wish the student well in their recovery and say “well done” to the teachers and other students who witnessed the incident for acting so quickly. Also worth pointing out, the air ambulance is not funded by the council – its funded by public donations. Making a donation may also be something you want to do instead of waiting for the government to pay your housing benefit and making ridiculous ill informed comments.
Yea I saw it happen , and he actually broke his leg not his ankle and he disloacated it as well after a football accident. The bone was sticking out so, ‘breaking his ankle’ is a bit of an understatement
I have to ask, is this a first for a fractur patient to be air lifted to the hospital on the Isle of Wight? I have noted the fracture department at St Mary’s is a very busy place, I wonder how many patients who have received treatment their was air lifted to St Mary’s..
Clare..
The poor child’s lower leg was completely broken and it was at 90 degrees to his upper leg. This is a limb threatening injury. The child was put to sleep and the taken to St Mary’s. THAT’S HOW SERIOUS IT WAS.
I am amazed at these self-appointed experts and commentators who simply assume it was a minor incident.
Has Anyone else sufferd equally or worse injuries here on the Isle of wight that needed air lifting to St May’s? or did they get there by road?..
Clare..
I was there and his leg was a right angle and there was bone showing, I believe you should just have a little bit of sympathy on the kid and move on, it happened.
Boy dislocated and broke his ankle playing football
