An 18-year-old cat who was left without a home has been given a second chance at happiness after a rescue effort brought him from the mainland to a loving new life on the Isle of Wight.
The elderly cat was found on the mainland earlier this year and taken to the vets where it was discovered he was microchipped.
Local rescue centres in Portsmouth and Southampton were contacted in the hope that someone would come forward, but after nearly 4 weeks of advertising and alerts, no owner was identified leaving Baby the elderly cat looking for somewhere to call home.
As he could not stay with the vet any longer, Maddie from the practice who had been caring for him emailed local rescue centres in a final effort to find him a new owner.
Island charity, Friends of the Animals were determined not to leave the gentle old cat confined to a pen when what he needed was a home and a willing lap, plans were quickly put in place to bring him across the Solent.
In what was described as ‘operation go’, a volunteer in Portsmouth collected him from the vets and brought him to the Isle of Wight on the Hovercraft.
Waiting Island side was his new companion Becky, who was overjoyed by his arrival.
She had already fallen in love with her gentle feline friend before even meeting him and when they got home Baby climbed straight onto Becky’s lap and later slept all night beside her on the bed.
The rescue took place on Friday (13th February).
Now, the 18-year-old cat who once had no name and no home has both. For however long he may have left, Baby will spend his days surrounded by warmth, comfort and the love he deserves.

Well done to all involved in finding him his new home, it’s sad that at 18 years old he had no home, I hope he’s settled in well?
nice happy ending X
A great story, may Baby live for many more years.
Can anyone tell me the purpose of the micro chip, I thought it was to identify the owner?
I rescued an unwanted 13 year old. He went from one side of the country to the other and enjoyed his retirement enjoying good food, lots of love, sunshine and company.
It’s nice to know that Maddie will spend the rest of his life warm contended and loved
Bless both the cat & the rescuer. Long life to both
