A red Mini has seemingly rolled backwards through the wall of Orchardleigh Car Park in Shanklin and is partially obstructing Orchardleigh Road.
The resulting damage has left the pavement on 1 side of the road completely obstructed and the road itself partially blocked by both the car and the stone debris resulting from the collision.
It appears to have been caused by a handbrake failure and comes just a day after another wall was damaged for the same reason. It also appears to have damaged some wooden fencing, some panels of which are now lying on the pavement.
Island Echo understands that Police are aware of the situation but have so far been unable to link a driver to the vehicle.
UPDATE SUNDAY @ 07:45 – Witnesses say that the owner returned to their vehicle and drove off shortly after 21:45 last night (Saturday).

I always leave my vehicle in gear to prevent it from rolling backwards or forwards should the handbrake fail especially if parked on a hill.
So much for DVLA records and the requirement for anybody selling a car as well as buying a car to notify the DVLA of the details
I find it fascinating how someone has an accident in a particular way, only for someone to repeat the procedure merely hours later on. It’s happened a few times before now. But we can only be thankful that no people or animals were flattened by either vehicles that were not secured properly.
My condolences of course go out to the poor unfortunate walls that got annihilated.
Kudos to the bumper manufacturer, a bit of T Cut and she’s good to go!
No way !!.. a little light weight car rolls back and demolishes a stone wall ?? .. The car was obviously reversed with force to do that damage and spread debris that far !! .. I don’t claim to be any sort of detective , but surely it is obvious to anybody ?? ..
Hopefully the drugged or drunk driver is soon identified..
Spot on a roll back must have started 20 metres away at least to plough through if atall
Sorry, but a MINI as opposed to an original Mini, weighs about 1 1/2 tonnes, as opposed to a Cortina which weighed about 850kg, it’s not a light weight car by any means
Isle of Wight version of the Italian Job
You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!
Ohh lordy lordy. I remember when I was a wee nipper. I helped my Dad .Cousin’s or whoever my dad was building that wall.It took us 7 years and a lot of mud and water to build. My old man spent most of his time breeding with the local Veg.We aren’t called strong in the arm and thick in the head for no reason.I have just found out there is a new thing called cement. Just like our island brain’s..
Now that’s a ‘roll’. What happened in Whitehall this week against Baroness Thatcher’s gates of restriction was a nudge.
What’s with all the ‘handbrake failures’? A friend of mine had a car roll into the front of his with the same excuse recently. If they really are failures and not just forgetfulness, someone needs to check where their MOTs are being done.
Another worthy drug driver
Oh good golly gosh hahaha …. another…. within a day …. you couldn’t make it up
Let me guess the handbrake failed
Omg ,this is ridiculous, put the handbrake on, put car in gear !!
Just a thought if it is handbrake failure ?????…and not in gear will insurance pay out ????
I was curious, good question; Any mechanical failures that caused the vehicle to slip out of gear would not be covered by insurance. This means that the insurance company may pay to replace a damaged bumper, but they will not cover the cost of a new transmission if the transmission caused the accident in the first place. If they wouldnt pay for any transmission error and it slips out of gear I’d imagine they certainly wouldnt pay if it’s not put in gear by the owner and tbh any car that slips is either not in gear or there has been a transmission error
They can claim on the wall’s insurance.
Handbrake FAILURES seem very trendy at the moment.

Napoleons Reach Sandown
Question for the motoring buffs, if the car has a handbrake failure I presume it is not road worthy , safe to drive report states police aware so how was the car allowed to drive away when not road worthy and not towed away ??
There’s no way that’s just a handbrake failure… Who’s kidding who?
Why don’t people learn to drive. Always engage bottom gear when your car is parked.
Why not show the number plate so that the Island community can identify this ideot and can identify who could show!
