Engineers are quite literally looking into a problem that has arisen in Ventnor this evening (Thursday) – a sink hole.
Motorists are being advised to divert as a result of a hole appearing in the carriageway at the top of the Cascades – the main road down onto the Esplanade from the town.
Although a small hole on the surface, the photo above – supplied to Island Echo – shows just how big the void is beneath.
It comes just days after works were carried out in the area, although the cause of this latest issue is unclear at this early stage.
It’s been a day for sinkholes… Beachfield Road in Sandown has been closed today to allow for repairs to be carried out to a reoccurring void in the middle of the road.
UPDATE @ 20:00 – The road has now been closed under an emergency closure.
UPDATE @ 17:00 ON FRIDAY (26TH) – The road will reopen later today.

Oh my that’s climate change , we all need to do our bit or our island will be one hole ‘ come on fellow caulkheads’
Roger, you sound just my cuppa tea. Took the words straight out of my mouth, maybe if these overners stayed away we’d have less pollution…Steve
Island roads are useless
What has a sinkhole to do with them? It wasn’t even them working in the road last week!
Just like the ones appearing along great Preston Rd. Shortly after a half ass tarmac job and only did half of it .Pathetic. 6 weeks of closure. For a days work. The mind boggles.
Right next to a manhole cover. Could that be a clue?
It’s not surprising really. Ventnor has been sliding into the sea for several decades. If youblook at how “The Vent”, as it is known in Upper Ventnor, you can see how the shear plane cuts across Newport Road above Ocean View Road. That road has been repaired, bridged and resurfaced on numerous occasions. Have have several family photos of the road, over the years and it is possible to see how Ventnor has dropped about three metres over the years.
It won’t be long before that point in the road will be closed. Many houses/cottages have already been demolished.
Pot holes everywhere. Nothing being done. Every pothole allows water to seep in undermining below the surface. Then you get this. Going to happen a lot more, as drain, water and gas pipes then collapse due to undermining. Yet more money wasted.
I wonder what would have happened if the Road works at the other end of the
Esplanade was still taking place.
Vehicles would have been stranded on the seafront.
Maybe IW Council would have scrapped parking fees!
Lol
I’m sorry IE but that pun isn’t very good and I’m a man of puns 😀
Well that will be a 10 week closure then. Everything takes 10 weeks these days if it involves the council.
Do they use a GPR when checking out areas prone to slips and potholes?. Rather than waiting for it to happen they could get a good heads up. Is the other end of the seafront open? Ventnor seafront will miss out on bank holiday trade.
Maybe no big heavy lorry’s should be allowed down that road.
Maybe no heavy lorries, or over-sized coaches, should be allowed anywhere on the Island.
So how would you get supplies to the shops , medical supplies to the hospital , that seems a stupid comment
So how will deliveries happen? Think before you comment
Bath road is open
Great. That means the esplanade will be shut for a year at least, like most roads in Ventnor.
No mention of problems with services. Just fill it with hard core and tarmac over the top.
Surely Beachfield road should be the headline story here since it affects a major bus route and is effectively extending the pain and suffering we’ve just endured with the Lake Hill closure.
