A main road in and out of Sandown is to be closed for more than 8 weeks from the start of September to allow Network Rail to remove 1 of 2 railway bridges that span across the carriageway. It has been confirmed that Avenue Road will be closed in both directions between Tamar Close and Perowne Way – underneath the railway bridge – between 2nd September and 31st October to enable works to the railway infrastructure. Network Rail is working to remove the disused bridge over Avenue Road, as well as renewing the in-use bridge that carries the Island Line tracks. Scaffolding is to be erected around the structure to enable it to be repainted, resulting in a complete road closure. This closure means traffic heading in and out of the seaside town of Sandown to/from Ryde and Brading will have to divert via Yaverland. Heavy goods vehicles that are unable to use Yaverland will have to divert via Arreton. Furthermore, between 23:00 on Friday 27th September and 05:00 on Monday 30th September, Morton Road and Perowne Way will also be closed to enable a crane to move in to remove the disused bridge. Access under the bridge will be maintained for pedestrians during the bulk of the work, save for when the bridge is being lifted out of place. Network Rail is also altering the electric rail that powers the trains around Sandown Station.

I hope the council is planning to turn off those traffic lights then, as they stand they only let 3 cars out of Perowne Way at a time.
Eight weeks! Would be done over a weekend on the mainland.
There are brains on the mainland
On the mainland they have all the heavy lifting gear and equipment already running on the rail tracks which we don’t have here so that’s another reason why it’ll take longer .
On the mainland, this wod be a 24 hour job on main roads and motorways.
That’s because the island is run by Numpties
It says to remove disused bridge ? The bridge is used to carry the rails network rail should of done this when it was closed for 6 months
Wasn’t the “disused” bit of the bridge supposed to be part of the two track working between Sandown and Ryde that has yet to appear?
Guess that won’t be happening now.
Look up, there are two parallel bridges – one for each track. The new passing loop was built at Brading, no plans for a second track here and 99.99% certain there never will be.
Please provide a visual map .I don’t know if I can leave home !?!?!?
Surely the photo and road name, with a bit of common sense, should be enough?
I am very curious whether the situation from the previous times when this road was closed will repeat itself. That the bollards on Peron Way will be put up only when the road is completely blocked and the traffic lights before leaving this road will be properly set, when people will start to have complaints that no one has extended the working time of these lights yet
Removing a disused bridge is a waste of time and money. It is presumably causing no problems, and at some point it may be required again, for instance if they were to reinstate the double track, or alternatively tarmac it over to create a dedicated bus lane.
Very unlikely and would need replacing anyway, it’s a century old. Long term it’s cheaper to remove than keep safe.
Will it impede the additional fire engines attending the Ocean Hotel?
Oh joy. I’m looking forward to this.
Local councillors where are you???
Probably sitting on their ar@es doing F’all
Stop whinging the work needs to be done.
Just in time for the schools to go back. Yay!
Exactly. It’s the school traffic which is responsible for a lot of the congestion in the first instance. Get the little darlings to walk..
Exactly. That’s what’s responsible for the congestion most of the time. Get the little darlings to walk and do the planet a favour.
I’m sure social services might have something to say about making the kids walk to school from Ryde every day.
Not heard of buses? We’re trying to educate society and the younger generation about climate change but not willing to lead by example.
The island is getting a joke , ferry cancellations most days, trains unreliable and a job that should take a weekend takes 8 weeks , who the hell is making these decisions ? I bet they aren’t affected by all this constant disruption
I see that some of you are obviously more qualified to do this work than the engineers network rail are using! Maybe you should volunteer your time? An extended period away from your keyboard warrior jobs would do all of us a massive favour.
Keep up all the amazing comments, they brighten my day.
Stfu no where does this job take 1/6th of a year, more corruption from the IWCC
Network Rail have a legal right to maintain the railway, what’s the council got to do with anything?
We speak from the experience of having seen the same work done on Lake hill.
In that case we saw:
So yes, perhaps we should volunteer – we’d find it hard make a worse job of it.
They managed to install an entire bridge gantry across the M25 Junction 10 in 48hrs and still opened early. Seems the Island is still reeling from the invention of the wheel..
Was it a railway bridge?
If it was in Japan they would probably have the whole thing done in 48/72 hours
8 weeks… unbelievable. Japan would have this done in 8 hours max.
What is the point of this expensive railway that is hardly used. It is usually closed either for repair, strikes, sickness . After
the Floating Bridge this is another white elephant.
Look on the bright side, I saw a road sign that says the floating bridge is back in service today!
