A sailing boat has crashed into and become wedged amongst a number of structural legs at Ryde Pier this evening (Saturday), prompting a response from HM Coastguard and the closure of Ryde Pier to vehicles.
At around 19:30, lifeboats from Cowes RNLI and Ryde Inshore Rescue were launched to reports that a large vessel had got into difficulty on the western side of Ryde Pier.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was also scrambled by Solent Coastguard.
Emergency services arrived on scene to find the vessel in amongst a number of structural supports that were once part of the main pier structure.
Thankfully, no damage has been caused to Ryde Pier itself.
A man and his dog, who were onboard the casualty vessel, have been safely landed on the pier and are now with Coastguard Rescue Officers.
It’s unclear what action will now be taken to prevent any further damage and to remove the stricken vessel from its predicament, as it edges closer to the main pier.
It’s thought that the boat dragged its anchor.
UPDATE @ 21:52 – Ryde Pier has now been closed to traffic as a precautionary measure, due to the boat moving closer to the main structure.
The bow is now under the pier.
Wightlink services are unaffected by the ongoing incident.

Had a gang of smugglers hijacked the vessel, filled her with evil drugs and drunk as skunks crashed her whilst staggering about shouting ‘heave ho me hearties’? Possible?

…
No, he was seen walking off the pier with his dog, wearing his lifejacket shortly after the coastguard turned up – it isn’t difficult is it, throw a line and tow the boat off the pier. The pier doesn’t need to be closed at all.
Wind looks NNW and blowing the steel yacht into the pier, rib probaly couldnt pull it clear..very sad, one look and you can see its this blokes life that boat, hope it makes it.
No need at all. Drag it away and beach it

I agree with you. People are unkind and I wish him and all he holds precious well
Didn’t say in another post that it had happened elsewhere with this boat?
This is why you shouldn’t take pets into dangerous situation! They have no say! Be stupid by yourself. Leave your pets at home!
That is the dogs home I expect
What if that is his home dummy
Who knows why he ended up in that position? Thanks to the RNLI for their prompt response, yet again. Well done to all involved.
totally agree well done to all involved./
Maybe the old sea dog was steering the boat.!!
Given this was the second time he had the lifeboats in attendance, maybe some penalty should be issued? You can’t drive without a licence and if you have an accident and it proven to be your fault, it results in points on your licencr or a ban. Does that happen in the sailing gang? A temporary ban or sent on a refresher course or fined?
More bad Isle of Wight driving, this time on the sea
