1 person has been flown to the major trauma centre in Southampton and another has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital after being knocked over by a van in Newport.
The incident occurred at Church Litten, outside Marks & Spencers, at just before 11:55 this morning (Friday), as previously reported by Island Echo.
It is understood the elderly casualties – a man and a woman – were crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing when they were struck by an Island Roads rubbish collection van. 2 dents are visible in the bonnet of the Iveco.
Members of the public rushed to the aid of the injured pair with a defibrillator collected from the nearby M&S store.
Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rushed to the scene with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance scrambled from its base at Thruxton. The helicopter landed in nearby Church Litten Park at around 12:15.
It has now been confirmed that 1 person has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, with another conveyed by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital.
The area remains cordoned off this afternoon whilst investigations into the incident continue.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has told Island Echo:
“Our thoughts are with those affected by a collision involving one of our vehicles in Church Litten, Newport, earlier today.
“A police investigation is underway and it would not be proper to comment further at this stage”.
Today’s incident comes less than 2 weeks after a woman was hit by a lorry and killed in Newport High Street. She has today been named as Brigid O’Hara Murray.
UPDATE @ 17:48 – Church Litten has now reopened.

Wishing them both a quick recovery
Old people need to watch where they’re going i swear XD
You are a utter knob what a vile comment you scum bag
How insensitive you are when you don’t know the facts. Age is not the issue.please be kind in your response or say nothing.
What a low life comment to make .
Have some empathy to the families involved .
Mark J, as you obviously know so much about this incident I trust that you have passed information on all you saw to the police.
They were on a crossing you absolute idiot
I agree mate
Everybody on here commenting about the accident on Friday before you lot trying to blame people involved in the accident get your facts right first about before say anything and was any you lot at the scene of the accident
I hope the people involved in accident have speedy recovery get well soon
What’s up with supposed safe crossings? It’s the third incident I’ve heard of in a few days. Maybe it’s another way the government are trying to kill everyone?
So sad.RIP
Noones died here!
Dickhead think about what your saying
Why do people like you blame bad driving on the council ect ect….
Don’t people like you understand bad driving on the island is getting worse by the day, we are in desperate need of more police on the island to get these idiots off our roads..
You were doing ok until the last part of your comment!
What’s wrong with drivers is the question here? Seems it’s dangerous to go shopping in Newport currently!
Yes Morris of course the government are trying to deal with soaring global population by arranging to have people bumped off in accidents. You should have been a detective.
They are perfectly safe if used correctly by pedestrians and road users.
We don’t know circumstances here yet . But yes so called safe crossings are not, for last few years the so called safe outside Sports Direct often leaves people in middle of road and traffic has green light and often is red when no one crossing or even waiting. Don’t believe ,go watch it yourself.
Wishing this couple best wishes for a speedy recovery and return home.
Knocked down on a pedestrian crossing! What is wrong with these drivers? Not paying enough attention and driving without Due Care.
Wishing both casualties a speedy recovery.
People drive to fast around Newport there is no need for it most are only going shopping so what’s the rush
I agree. Too many driving too fast EVERYWHERE around the island. Utter dic*heads!
Very sad for ALL parties involved but don’t assume that because it a pedestrian crossing its the drivers fault until you know the facts.
My thought go out to the injured persons and the driver.
I’m not 100% sure but wasn’t it on a pedestrian crossing with lights? I understand that you still need to drive with caution at these crossings but pedestrians also need to take note of a “red man”. I don’t think any if us know who had the green light, I’m sure it’ll all come out soon.
So awful to hear of another incident of this kind. Obviously we don’t know the circumstances surrounding this but I’m so aware of the number of incidents involving vehicles on the island.
Has anyone thought to tell elderly about the green Cross code especially as there is a crossing point just up the road or perhaps new batteries in there hearing aids as bikers say load pipes save lives point taken
You be old one day, sunshine.
Unfortunately eamon’s single working brain cell cannot process the fact that he will be old in the future and as he is so stupid now he has no hope.
Don’t be so rude and assuming – you will be elderly yourself one day – but with an attitude like yours you’ve probably found the elixir to eternal youth !
also it isn’t just the elderly that are deaf – I’ve been deaf all my life and have met plenty of folk like you – fortunately today folk are more tolerant, particularly the very young generation.
I have had many close shaves here with pedestrians crossing when the lights are green. Especially when one drives round the corner towards Elite garages people are also crossing from Morrison’s not on the green man signal. I have had to sound my horn on a number of occasions to re-educate these pedestrians. I suspect even if they get hit they will probably be in line for a compo claim of some sort.
Ever try taking your foot off the gas when in a built up area? Maybe people are erratic when crossing the road but that only means drivers take this into consideration. I’ve seen vehicles sweep round town with no signalling or slowing
Yep, you hit the nail on the head. Pedestrians here are on the whole are erratic, usually drunk, drugged, deaf, dim, docile or nearly dead. Requires driving at very low speed with your wits about you.
Hopefully you will get older sunshine, your f comment is pathetic.
The traffic light set up in that location is horrendous, no sooner do you start moving than the pedestrian stop crossing outside Readers changes to red. Absolute nightmare at times. Perhaps if they did away with this crossing and left the 3 areas of crossing on this road only traffic flow may improve. I too have been in a traffic flow when some people think they can cross quicker than a vehicle, they don’t look at the Green man but at the traffic light and some confusion perhaps over the colours affects their moving forward. Don’t know but more work needs to be done on improving the traffic lights in UK. Perhaps opt for WALK NOW lights?
Horrible crossing there.
I feel for all of them both people hit into I hope you a quick recovery.
The driver as no matter what the circumstances it must be horrid for you.
Hope for quick recovery and friends and family rally around the driver
That junction is very dangerous.
IW Council need to make many Island Roads safe.
I pray the persons injured are going to be ok.
If they were on a pedestrian crossing, then the island roads van was in the wrong,
Not if they crossed on a green light it isn’t! Come on use your small brain
A lot of people of all ages walk straight out into the road be it on a crossing or not now the law states drivers have less rights!! Yes if the crossing lights are on green then it is the drivers responsibility to stop but so many pedestrians gamble now or are oblivious to what’s going on around them. I was turning right into my road last week indicating & a person never looked & walked straight out into the road, luckily I just stopped before I hit her – so who’s to blame there!
You would be at fault because you were turning into the road & pedestrians have right of way.
Time to update your highway code book!
Yes, but coming up to any crossing the driver needs to be alert to the possibility of someone crossing over.
What colour was the lights, I wasn’t there, you obviously were
The number of pedestrian accidents appear to have increased since the changes to the highway code book. I am certain some of these must be associated with the right of way at controlled and uncontrolled crossings changes. Following off internet: Drivers are not required to stop at an uncontrolled crossing point. The pedestrian must wait at the kerb until there is a suitable gap in traffic to allow them to cross and should only then cross with due care and attention. Second change: What are the new rules for pedestrians crossing? The 2022 Highway Code says that if pedestrians have started crossing and drivers want to turn into the road, pedestrians crossing have priority, and the traffic should give way to them.
I was nearly hit on the pedestrian crossing the other day because the driver jumped the lights,it’s lucky I was looking.
The council need to bring back cctv and invest in anpr cameras on all traffic lights, this would definitely stop people jumping red lights
Until the police release what happened no one should jump to conclusions on this, unless you were a witness to it,I hope the couple both recover from this
Yes I’ve noticed an increase in either jumping the lights or massive increase in speed to cross over. Let’s face it the Island isn’t that big and a few minutes of patience may save someone’s life.
I was just saying the other day to afriend of mine, we should make the roads like America, only can cross the roads at crossings, if cross the road anywhere else then you get fined, be a lot simpler then for all involved, drivers and pedestrians, as you know then people are only meant too cross at crossings,
It was on a pedestrian crossing obviously island roads driver speeding and ignoring the lights and or the fact there was pedestrians crossing as usual they all drive like assholes that lot and even if the pedestrians don’t use the button to activate the lights and just cross the highway code rule of law states when approaching traffic lights and pedestrian crossings you MUST slow down and prepare to stop and pedestrians have right of way in all situations at all times always have had wether it be green light red light amber light or no light hope this driver looses his licence for life and looses his job about time the useless law in this country started actually pulling and imposing real sentences on these arrogant driver’s
What a stupid statement. There is no obviously a out it! Did you witness the accident? Probably not. I have hit a person on a crossing who walked straight out in front of me at a distance if about 2 metres,
there was no chance of stopping. I was not drunk, drugged or speeding. There are idiots on pavements as Amwell as on roads!
CONT: Who think they own the road and the rules don’t apply to them
People want socialism to solve all these problems.
Why don’t we have a national socialist worker’s party…
Basically communism and thats never gone wrong….
Strange reaction to this story, what’s bloody party politics got to do with it? Go wash your tin hat.
Right like the Russian’s, they are really flavour of the month
As no facts have been posted, perhaps it’s wiser to stop speculating.
Both parties could have been at fault, the driver may have been driving too fast, jumped the lights or just was not paying attention. Or the elderly couple crossed without activating the lights, or crossed without looking properly. Who knows? Only those that were there.
The island roads driver did not step out that day with the intent of hitting an elderly couple, and the elderly couple didn’t step out with the intent of getting themselves injured.
We all know people are reluctant to use crossings as it ‘takes too much time’ – we’ve all done it and we’ve all seen it. But, each circumstance is different.
The facts are as follows:- the lights were on green for the vehicles. People were on both sides waiting to cross. The Island Roads van was following two other vehicles through the green light. The elderly couple stepped out in front of vehicle instead of waiting with the others for the lights to change. If the driver had been speeding the outcome would have been a lot worse. As said before, these are the facts and not guesswork. Try and give the driver a break here as this has probably played heavily on his mind since the incident
Hope they are both ok and as for the comment from that utter knob maybe if it was your relatives you’d be different in your inferior little opinion
