Tributes have been paid to 81-year-old Brigid O’Hara Murray from Totland, who was tragically killed after being run over by a lorry in Newport High Street last week.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident outside the former Carphone Warehouse shop on the High Street at just before 15:10 on the afternoon of Monday 16th January.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, nothing could be done to save Brigid’s life and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Friday, the High Street was closed by Police to allow for a reconstruction of the fatal collision. It’s been suggested that the 81-year-old into contact with the lorry outside Clarks, with the heavy goods vehicle coming to a stop just past the traffic lights further down the road.
Over the past week flowers have been laid near the scene.
Paying tribute, her family has said:
“We are deeply saddened by the death of our beloved sister Brigid.
“Her death leaves a void at the heart of our family where she was greatly loved not only as a sister but also as an aunt and cousin. She is also mourned by a wide circle of friends and colleagues on the island, across the UK and abroad.
“We are very grateful to the police and emergency services for their swift involvement at the scene.
“We are deeply affected by the many tributes, both floral, at the scene of the accident, and on social media. The fact that almost all of them come from complete strangers is most moving and we would like to thank the senders for their sympathy.”
A 24-year-old man from Bembridge was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been released under investigation.

Stop the lorries going through the town unless they’re delivering there. This isn’t the first time it’s happened in the town & unless something is done, tragically, it won’t be last. Don’t let her die in vain.
So what do you do about busses? Look how many people have been hit by them in Newport
I don’t ever remember seeing a report of a pedestrian hit by a bus in Newport town

Would have thought driver was too young to drive such a lorry. Years ago had to be over 25 for the insurance..
I’m pretty sure that was only for passenger vehicles
You can be 18 now and go straight from a mini to a 44 ton class one lorry. Crazy
whats that got to do with anything??
Clarks is quite some distance from where that lorry finally stopped.
Suggest waiting for the investigation to complete and a public hearing into the findings and recommendations.. drawing conclusions right now is not the time, my sympathy to the family & friends of Brigid and I hope the driver is receiving support during the investigation .. an accident that should never have happened .
