Council plans to spend over £1million on 10 apartments for temporary accommodation have been given the green light by Isle of Wight councillors.
The policy, finance and resources committee last week (Thursday) unanimously approved the purchase of Kiln House on Woodbine Close in Newport.
Kiln House comprises ten flats which are currently leased to County Hall and purchasing them will ensure the authority’s statutory duties in relation to housing can continue to be met, according to a committee report.
It says:
“The council is currently providing temporary accommodation for in excess of 200 households. This accommodation is sourced largely from third parties. There is currently a reliance on bed and breakfast accommodation, and the council has committed to a reduction in this area.
“More specifically there is a commitment to ensure that no child spends more than six weeks in bed and breakfast accommodation.
“In addition to the commitment to reduce the reliance on bed and breakfast accommodation and in order to ensure a more stable supply of accommodation for this purpose the council is seeking to invest in these properties so that it has permanent solutions to provide directly to households in need.”
Alliance council leader Phil Jordan said:
“It’s looks like a progressive, good move forward – positive. Always trying to address some of the issues we have with homelessness in a positive way and in a long-term way, owning the properties that people in the future can access can only be a good thing.”

better be for islanders and not the recently imported burdens
Why is the island full of racists, they should be available
for whoever requires them!
Grow up
Why dont you house a few then?
look after your own first,no wonder we are getting infested, with idiots like you supporting it,why dont you trundle down to dover and give them a hug when they illegally arrive?
and you spew diversity, you really are an utter idiot, and you need to wake up!
Well said.
Another Numpty
Bless
Everyone is entitled, the island is no different
to the mainland, the majority of the UK are housing
in need migrants.
Grow up
Bless you!
And those would be on The Island?,if your sure enough to wobble that chip on your shoulder, say what you mean!.
Jay needs to get over their r acist issues.
It’s 2026 and some people are still nasty.
1 million . A council that bleats in arrears and putting up council tax and car parking fees … the same council that voted in an appalling pay rise to themselves and yet are so financially strapped for cash , can find a million out of thin air … amazing.
Let’s hope they put it towards islanders, put them first for a change
Homes should be available for whoever needs them!
Homelessness for whom are we talking about here, and who gets priority? War vets maybe? Local people? Those of no fault evictions? Those who have lost their homes due to loss of jobs?
Everyone is entitled to an home, whoever they are and wherever
they are from.
I hope these house’s are for Islanders that have been on the waiting list; not the new influx of ‘carer’s we have witnessed in the last 3 yrs.
The island needs Carer’s, they should get first pickings,
they do a great job and are deserving.
The same council sold off a large building of flats, more than this, along Robin Hood Street in Newport – I think for about £250K or less.
As a rate payer I would have preferred they had kept the larger building in Newport to provide more flats for people who needed them than this building four times the price for only 10 flats.
